We had the good fortune of connecting with Vanna Takke and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vanna, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career for three reasons. The first is the opportunity to constantly grow and morph with trends and new techniques, my job is a constant learning process and there is always room to be better. Second, in a world where everything is becoming automated, I do feel a pretty strong sense of security that my line of work and artistry is something that AI and robots are going to have a ridiculously hard time replicating. Plus, nobody wants to stick their finger in a robot when you could opt for a nail artist, who definitely will not malfunction and possibly chop off your finger. Third, I am creative and artistic, and it feels like such a beautiful privilege to make a living doing what I love.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My bread and butter is doing nails, and it has been for awhile now. I pride myself on looking outside of the US for new techniques and inspiration, and being ahead of those trends that will eventually hit the US. As for my Gel Polish company, what sets it apart is the drive for ethical ingredients, it’s vegan, cruelty free, child labor free, and mica free. This was crazy challenging to accomplish, but not impossible! We now have a full collection of 150 polishes and have many projects in the works, hoping to get into nail stores in Arizona next year. As a 21 year old woman, it’s been a huge push to be taken seriously not only in business but also in life. People can be so small minded when it comes to a young woman having success, let alone doing it herself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m gonna answer this one was an actual itinerary for a friend by fiancé and I had staying with us over the last week. Day one, they relaxed at home after a long drive and went to the famous Dutch Bro’s because our friend had never tried it. Day two of course they came to the lovely Slain Studios and got a Russian manicure done by me, it’s perfect for men who want their cuticles cleaned up with no polish, or women who would like to extend their manicure. I find that men tend to be more comfortable at Slain than competing salons because it’s a very unisex vibe. Cornish pasty is a must, as well as of course hitting up Top Golf.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This should definitely be dedicated to the person I’m sharing the rest of my life with, Tijmen Takke. He has been the best partner and personal support I could ever ask for, he supports all my crazy business ideas, and gives me the security I need to take risks, all while pushing me to grow to the best version of myself. Ik hou van jou Tijmen. Dank je.
