We had the good fortune of connecting with Venus Gilliam and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Venus, why did you pursue a creative career?
For as long as I can remember I have been creating! from having sketchbooks full of fashion designs at 7 to modeling and walking balls at 15. Being an artist has always been a part of me it was just about having the space to express and showcase it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a 22-year-old black trans woman who has come from nothing, I’ve always known I wanted to pursue art, I knew it was going to be extremely hard but I also knew that I was a fighter and I was going to do anything to make my dreams a reality. My goal as an artist and entrepreneur is to create art, clothing, and spaces for the little girl in me who had nothing, who felt like she had no one, the little girl who was always reading magazines or on the internet trying to escape her reality. at PLNETVENUS we do so many different things to uplift the community, we’ve worked with multiple small businesses to create and curate their brand photoshoots, we have a clothing line, We are even hosting our first female artist & entrepreneur networking event this July to uplift and connect woman in the community.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Every time I have my girls visit from out of town I have a whole itinerary lined up for them! we have to start the day just exploring Oldtown, going into shops, and enjoying the sun, then we head over to The Drunk Monk for happy hour to enjoy some good food and drinks, and now it’s off to Fashion Square to get a new outfit for the night, And for nightlife ill take them to Patties, I truly can’t resist a good dive bar with good music and darts. The hangover cure the next morning is HashKitchen and their beautiful Bloody Mary Bar.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Everything I do is for and because of my baby sister and my partner, I never had unconditional love until the two of them came into my life, and that’s truly what gets me out of bed every day. My family chosen and blood will always be the reason I work to create safe spaces for artists and creatives to thrive.
