I think it’s always a risk when you make something you love into a career. Plus, I’m a risk-averse person by nature, so deciding to put my myself out there in the first place was quite a leap. When I first started on my publishing journey, I had no idea that I would be fortunate even consider quitting my day job for a while – a risk in itself, on a practical level – to focus on writing, but I have been very fortunate in that regard. I think every decision is about weighing risk, whether it be ‘should I have a cup of coffee this late?’ or ‘how should I approach this client about a hard subject?’. I think everyone plays out the benefits vs the disadvantages throughout the day whether it’s knowingly or more subconsciously. As I’ve moved through my own consulting business, the risk I weigh the most is how projects fit on my calendar; looking at any areas that might not go according to plan to make sure I can protect other clients’ project needs. The nice part of starting a brand when you’ve barely hit the legal drinking age is you don’t quite ever think about risk. You have nothing to lose when you literally have nothing to lose. My snowboard career was my main focus right along side of starting Dang Shades so for the first 6 years I was head down focus mode for 4 months through the winter and Dang was originally my side hustle to stay busy in-between.
