When writing my picture book Her Poems: Women Poets Who Changed the World, I was inspired by the poet Maya Angelou’s profound words—”Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” I feel that her words have shaped how I view success. In addition, success for me is being able to positively impact others through what I do, whether that be writing books or creating art. By writing books to inspire children, creating an advice book to help teens cope with the stresses of the pandemic and making art to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, I have felt successful knowing that I was able to make a difference.
