What role has risk taking played in your life or career?

In our experience, most folks, including ourselves don’t have enough of an understanding of risk and the role it plays in our lives and careers and so we have made a concerted effort as a team to have conversations about risk with our interviewees. We’ve shared some highlights below.

The awesome thing about having a business partner is talking the risks out and taking them together. We are full time college students and we knew that taking on our own business was going to be a risk from the beginning, but in the long run it would be worth it. We have learned so much that we could not have learned any other way than trial and error. Risk is involved in every decision we make and in my mind, it’s just another word for uncertainty, which is unavoidable. Even when we think there is a certain pay off, life can have a wild way of reminding us that there is no such thing as a sure thing. In my life and career, that’s exactly why I feel comfortable and even compelled to take risks and try new things- almost nothing works out the way we imagined it would, and some things work out even better than we could have anticipated, or they unfold in a way that leads us down a beautiful path that we couldn’t have seen coming. Like they say, with risk comes reward. I love comfortability, however that comfort is exactly what led me to changing my life’s course. Taking a chance on myself has led me to so many amazing opportunities in my life – like taking a semester off in college to work on a cruise ship. That allowed me to travel throughout Western Europe and meet incredible people from all over the world. Risking my full-time job in corporate America to chase my passion has allowed me to shift my perspective of myself and what I am capable of.
