We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Eff and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jake, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I feel like life is a risk in general. I believe every single thing we do has an effect on the next thing, and everything after. I might as well make sure the risks that I’m voluntarily taking are for the right reasons to my story. I feel like anyone who has ever made a mark on the world has had to roll the dice on themselves time and time again. When I look back at the end of it all, as long as I was working towards something that matters to me, I feel like all of the risks I’ve taken and will have to take will have been worth it all, regardless of the outcome.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started making music super young. I was like 8 years old. My brothers were already rapping so I was kinda following what they were doing but I ended up being really good at it early on. We always stuck at it through elementary school, middle school, and high school and that’s when I realized I could probably take this further and do it on a more professional level.

It definitely was not easy. Making music and writing raps was never the hardest part, but staying persistent even through the days that nobody really was listening to me were the toughest times. It’s easy to get down on yourself as a creative that’s going after something bigger than the ‘average’ goals you might hear about. I moved from South Tucson to Phoenix midway through high school. Having to relocate cities in the middle of my teenage years was a tough thing to do. I didn’t know a single person in the city of Phoenix. That alone made me want to give up at times, like how am I gonna try and build a brand new fan base in a city where nobody knows me? But I always knew I had a gift. I knew I wasn’t just some guy tryign to rap. I knew I had the power to go global. So I just kept recording, kept working, kept putting music out. Eventually, I started growing more and more.

The biggest lesson I learned was that you just can’t stop. So many things cloud up the vision, especially in this internet age. All I knew was I had to keep making this music, keep progressing, stay the course. It’s not about what milestones you’ve hit in the past or what you SAY you’re gonna do or what the next person has going for themselves. The only thing to do is to keep it pushing, really lock in on what you’re tryna do and actually do things to get you closer to your goal every day.

I feel like that’s what sets me apart and what I want the world to know about me. I really kept it solid, I never told no lies, I never glorified no weird stuff, I just always worked on my craft and always continued to grow. Never been perfect, I just took my real life and put it into music and I feel like that’s hard to come across these days.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Mannnn this is a tough one because there’s so many dope spots to be!! I think food spots we gotta cover all bases, I would have to go to a few of the classic hood spots, but also love me some fine dining as well. On a casual day we might go hit Tam’s in South Phoenix or ATL Wings, head out west for some Tacos at Ta’Carbon, catch a Vibe over at Bacanora or Pizzeria Bianco…A steak dinner at Durant’s downtown, Fogo de Chao, or even some Honey Hot Pizza and Prosciutto Shrimp at Hanny’s downtown. The list goes on and on though, I know I probably left out some gems!!

To hangout I’m probably gonna say the studio!! Lol most of my free time is spent there. But Downtown Phoenix is always a vibe to find a drink anywhere. You can just hop around. You might find me at Killer Whale, Valley Bar, Hanny’s, Pemberton or something smooth like that. We try and stay away from the places that get too packed out, but that’s just my preference. On a crazy night you might just see me pop up at Cobra/Hi-Score or Champagne Lanes lol

There’s also plenty of things to do like the Art Museums/shows, different cultural centers, or even some local music shows. I’m always up for whatever.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout Arizona as a whole. The state as a whole has been gaining more and more traction in every aspect. I love to see my home state growing so rapidly. I love to see how the culture continues to grow and I love how I am still discovering Arizona more and more even though I’ve been here my whole life. Shoutout Cafe Pico for putting my name in rooms when I’m not around. Shoutout to all my people that keep the dream going. All my mentors, my fans, my peers and my competition. Shoutout to y’all for having me as well!!
