We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Steven and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Most people don’t realize how important audio is to having a quality video. Imagine watching a movie but you can’t hear the dialogue, or there is really annoying wind in the background, it would probably make you want to watch something else. This means learning an entire specialty in addition to the visual portion; making sure that I have the right gear and know exactly how to use it so families have their memories preserved or businesses can get their message across.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Video and film have always been a passion of mine. I have a huge collection of movies, not all of them are cinematic masterpieces, but I really enjoy story-telling and the film-making process. When I had the opportunity to switch careers in 2015, I took the risk of trying to make money doing something I genuinely enjoy and be my own boss.

We now specialize in high quality wedding films and commercial marketing videos. Based on our own trial and error of marketing, we are in a good position to help other businesses refine their message and put their best face forward. It’s awesome to help a company see their vision come to life with a video they can be proud to share and that helps them reach their goals.

I think my success so far has come from constantly pushing through each challenge. I can’t tell you how much I get tired of solving endless mysteries like, ‘why is a piece of technology not working?’ and then figuring out the following puzzle of how to make it work the way I want it to. Sometimes I just want things to be easy. On the other hand, every challenge teaches me something new and I think I’ve become more of an expert in my field because of it.

One thing that has made a huge difference in expanding our business is making personal relationships with others in the field. Flagstaff is an especially nice place to own a business because we can connect with fellow professionals in a relaxed environment. I love working with my favorite local professionals because I know things will work smoothly. We refer them, they refer us, and as another local videographer said, “There’s plenty of work to go around!”

Ultimately, I want people to know me as the one who is never satisfied with mediocrity. If someone is counting on me to deliver, they can be confident I will do everything in my power to meet and exceed their expectations.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Like most people in Flagstaff, I enjoy being outdoors, away from the hustle and bustle. I also have three dogs so my regular hang out spots are mostly on the FUTS and random offshoots. But I also like Salsa Brava, Pato Thai, Dark Sky Brewing and NiMarco’s!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really appreciate all the professionals who have shared their expertise for free with the video community, like DSLR Video Shooter and Gerald Undone.
