We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Mounce and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mary, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my first skin care business kinda happened by accident. I was a newly graduated Aesthetician in 2005, and had the greatest opportunity to get hired immediately at the school I went to. The owner, Karen Wackerman would always tell me that I needed to go out on my own and create my own business. She saw things in me that I didn’t at the time. Honestly, the thought of having my own business excited me, but terrified me more. I didn’t have the confidence or the finances to pursue it, at least I told myself that. Time passed and I ignored her push. Then a unique opportunity came along for my first job outside of school. A new business owner wanted to open a spa in downtown Phoenix. By chance he contacted the school and asked for recommendations to help him set everything up. He had the ambition to do his own business, but didn’t know anything about the industry. The school recommended me and I got the job! I basically built his spa from scratch. Created the menu of services, designed the treatment rooms, ordered all the equipment, created protocols, picked the skin care lines and helped with marketing. Unfortunately, he went out of business within the first year due to poor management. With the encouragement from a close friend, I took a chance and purchased most of his equipment and products to venture out on my own. My boyfriend at the time let me use a tiny room in his art studio and that was the birth of my first skin care clinic.
It really was a tough journey in the first few years, but I persevered. Over time, I fine tuned my vision, got more training and education and started to focus on what kind of practitioner I really wanted to be. I have lost a lot and gained even more, but I really value those lessons early in my career. I now know without a shadow of a doubt that I am an entrepreneur at heart and I would not want it any other way!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business has evolved over the years, but my philosophy has remained the same, “Holistic approach, Clinical results”. I have both holistic and clinical training and apply it uniquely within my practice. Everything I do is highly customized and I am 100% committed to helping my clients achieve their skin goals. To say I am passionate about skin is an understatement. I really try to educate the importance of skin health to all my clients. I also have created my own skin care lines that heal and nourish the skin. Really clean, but scientifically backed skin care products/ingredients are the foundation of my healthy skin philosophy. My goal is to continue to grow my practice and eventually move into teaching. I am so passionate about skin, mind/body connection, science based skincare, holistic treatments and clean ingredients that I would love to share my knowledge with other practitioners in the industry one day.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a nature lover, so I would plan trips to a few amazing parks, hiking trails and the beautiful botanical garden in Phoenix. I also love food including Thai, Indian and/or Persian and would pick one of the many great restaurants in town and indulge. There are so many things to do in Phoenix or surrounding areas that honestly it’s hard to list. Fantastic coffee houses, art walk and museums to name a few.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really want to give a shout out to some of the most amazing friends one could ever dream of, especially Richard, Jennifer and Kristien! Also want to thank Karen Wackerman for seeing the potential in me while I was just a student in aesthetics. You were a role model to me from the very beginning!
Without the support from my closest friends, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It’s been through the relentless encouragement of my friends that has pushed me beyond the doubt, fear and loss of confidence that sometimes comes with the territory of going after your dreams. I jumped into an industry that I was still trying to figure out early in my career and I floundered a lot. I feel blessed that I always had a small group of close friends around me, supporting me by reinforcing their deep belief in my potential. Without this constant and unwavering support, I don’t think I would have stuck with my goals to see them through. I just want to say that NEVER underestimate or take for granted your tight circle of support.
