We had the good fortune of connecting with Cora Mercer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cora, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I discovered my passion for tailoring at a young age, sewing my first outfit at just 9 years old. That early spark led me into the alterations industry, but it wasn’t until later in life that I saw myself as an entrepreneur. I recognized a significant gap in the bridal alterations field—most seamstresses worked solo, leaving brides vulnerable if something went wrong. Who would finish their dress if their seamstress was unavailable?
As I explored this further, I realized bridal shops faced similar challenges. What would they do when their trusted tailor retired or their preferred seamstress was overbooked?
This inspired me to create Tailored in White. We’re revolutionizing the bridal alterations industry by offering a team of skilled tailors who ensure reliability for both brides and bridal shops. Our mission is to educate, empower, and support, building a collective that will endure for generations, long after I retire.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
While my path to business ownership may seem destined, it was built on grit and perseverance. When I opened Tailored in White Scottsdale, I arrived in Arizona with just $17 and a vision to transform the alterations industry. Financing and launching the business on my own, I soon expanded to Denver and Portland. Just as things were taking off, the pandemic hit—an immense challenge for an industry rooted in face-to-face service.
With unwavering determination and a commitment to overcome obstacles, we quickly adapted. Despite the odds, we kept all our locations open and continued to serve brides in the Tailored in White communities.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Bella Lily Bridal was instrumental when we first started Tailored in White and we absolutely adore them!
