Meet Robbie Pfeffer: Multi-Media Artist with Playboy Manbaby

We had the good fortune of connecting with Robbie Pfeffer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robbie, what inspires you?
I have always been inspired by people who want to pursue a very distinctive and specific vision or people who seem to be unable to not speak in a very unique voice. When I say that I really mean weirdos. I like people who are very clearly not doing something for the money or fame or whatever odd outside approval people are compelled by. But they seem to need to do whatever they are doing. Those are my people. In music and art I enjoy people who have a voice that is so incredibly and obviously their own. Like Tom Waits in music or David Lynch with films or Ada Lovelace in science. People who just did things they found interesting in a way that is interesting.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think my creative “career” is marked by 2 traits. 1) I’m bored incredibly easily, so I’m constantly trying new things and keeping my creative plate full, I’ve run venues, thrown festivals, done visual art, video art, animation, played and recorded music, printed zines, conducted interviews and whatever else seems interesting. 2) I have never been bothered by being bad or failing at something. Failure is a huge part of progress and I’ve failed my way to competent in a couple things, also success is subjective so never stop if you’re enjoying something and it doesn’t hurt anyone.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
AH there’s so many places you can’t go so this is on the assumption that this is a post-pandemic world. I’m an indoors cat so I’m not gonna hike anything. So here’s a real good day. 10am- Wakeup 10:30am- Coffee at Dark Hall Coffee or JoBot 11:00am- Delhi Palace Indian Food in Tempe Noon- Stop by Haji Baba Grocery in Tempe to buy tea 1:00pm- Burton Barr Library 3:00pm- Catch an early movie at Film Bar 5:00pm- Happy Hour drink at Thunderbird Lounge or Gracie’s 6:00pm- Dinner at Cornish Pasty or La Santisima 7:00pm- Ice Cream from Novel or Churn 8:00pm- Watch a show at Crescent Ballroom, Rebel or Trunk Space 11:00pm- Karaoke at any gay bar on 7th or Melrose. *Chef’s Kiss* Perfect day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I feel like I am a product of a thousand encouraging voices in the Phoenix community. But the first person who I really feel like understood my particular brand of weird was my high-school English teacher Mrs. Seep. She was the first person who really got what I was doing. What I found funny and in what way I was clever and unique. My main goal in school previously was to antagonize teachers and I wrote a paper about a dystopian world ruled by Martha Stewart in which people with unkempt gardens are recycled into fertilizer to feed the gardens of good obedient neighbors. Instead of getting mad, she thought it was great. She was really the first person who encouraged me to embrace the weird and I haven’t stopped since.
