We had the good fortune of connecting with Adelyn Baber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adelyn , what role has risk played in your life or career?
I would say the risk of being rejected has played a large role in my career and life because it led to many of my networking opportunities. I had to be OK with the risk of being told “no” in order to get a few important “yeses!” It led to big opportunities that lead to many aspects of where my career is now.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work could be considered a combination of conceptual style with an editorial flair. I get the most excited when I’m working with a creative team to create my images. Most recently my work got accepted to be featured in British Vogue twice which is a big accomplishment that I am very grateful for! I would say I got where I am today professionally by having an awesome support system, networking and learning to be okay with rejection while making a few fearless choices along the way. One of my biggest challenges professionally has been the business aspect of photography. I’ve always been an artist and struggled with the business aspect of creating art. I had to find value in myself before asking others to do it. I would say a big lesson I learned along the way was to try to be the type of person I felt like I would’ve liked to ask questions to when I was first starting out. Everyone needs a little help sometimes and it’s nice to be that person for somebody else every once in a while. The message I would like to leave with anybody reading this would be to be okay with not putting yourself in a “category box” when it comes to photography or art. I would find myself being asked to define what kind of photographer or artist I was like I needed to be categorized with one group or another. The truth is, sometimes I felt like being a wedding photographer because I wanted to help tell someone’s love story, and then the next time I was shooting Fashion line for an up-and-coming designer. I didn’t want to limit myself to one or two categories because I might miss out on something I didn’t even know I had a passion for until I tried it!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you’re visiting Tucson Arizona, I would say to get the most out of your visit you should check out the biospheres and the national monuments for some good hiking opportunities. Make sure to check out the awesome art downtown! So many shops and art on display. I personally love The Hub for good eats, but our food trucks are serious business! The independent distillery and the playground are great places to hang out and have a drink or two. For night time entertainment, the Fox theater and Hotel Congress usually have some pretty interesting shows going on.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband Sean Baber has been a huge part of where my career is because without his support I wouldn’t be able to juggle being a parent and have a fulfilling career doing what I love. Shout out to my partner in life and my best friend!
