We had the good fortune of connecting with Ann-Suhet Kamffer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ann-Suhet, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up on a farm between Wolmaransstad and Schweizer-Reneke in the North West Province of South Africa. I know that my upbringing has had a major impact on who and what I am today. I was very fortunate to have been raised with values such as integrity, honesty and to be just and fair. Being educated in a rural (“platteland”) area, not only had an impact on me to be humble, but to need to work for everything that I wanted and dreamt of becoming. I grew up, knowing the poorest of the poor and the richest of the rich (well, what we thought was the benchmark for being rich at that time). We (my older brother and I), were taught by our parents to study and work hard, to dream big and to be versatile in any aspect of life. That’s why, I believe that one of my biggest traits is to be as adaptable as possible. It does not matter in what position I find myself in – I will be adaptable and I will find a way to make things work for me and the greater good for the people around me. Coming from a small community, it is important for people to stand together and care for each other. I am an attorney today, living out the values of integrity and being just and fair as best I can, but it is also a massive privilege to be able to give back to my community by assisting members of the community in which I grew up. I was taught not to forget your roots and, therefore, I try to visit my hometown as much as possible – to remember where I came from and how far I have come thus far. It is sometimes the most humble beginnings that lead to the biggest endings – and that is where I am heading to.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am the Head of the Litigation Department at Van Deventer and Van Deventer Incorporated. It was not easy to walk this road to come here and I believe there will be more challenges to overcome along the way. But, at a very young age, I have been blessed with many opportunities that have shaped me immensely in character and that has also impacted my work ethic. What sets me apart is my willingness to walk “the extra mile”. I truly through myself behind each case to ensure that my clients get the best possible outcome from their matter. I have overcome obstacles with the help of my fellow colleagues, as Van Deventer and Van Deventer Incorporated has an immense support system for me, for which I am very grateful. From my story and what my brand represents, I would like people to know that not all lawyers are money-grabbing, greedy thieves, but that there are still “a few good men” out there.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Sandton is the commercial heartbeat of South Africa. There is so much to do, but a visit to Monte Casino is definitely on the list – for an amazing experience of good food and fun-filled activities to have. I always love a good theatre production or two, when there is some time from a busy schedule. Being in a quite stressful professions, I like to whisk away at a spa and, therefore, the Renaissance Day Spa at The Michelangelo Towers is a “must have”. “Tiger’s Milk” and “Social on Main” deserve a few shout-outs for fun quiz nights and drinks with friends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Firstly, I need to give praise to the God almighty, who I know has blessed me with opportunities that is not possible from any human hand. A huge shoutout to my parents, for always believing in me, supporting me and, as my mother would say, “run behind me”. Lastly, to all my friends and colleagues, who weathers the storms with me, who sits with me at a fallen stage and raises back up to help me keep going. Thank you all – I am very little without you in my life.
