We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Mardikian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I fell in love with college football when I was a little girl. College football was my first love, and it is a game that means so much to me. I used to sit with my dad on the weekends, and he taught me the game of football. It is something we both share, and my favorite part of college football Saturdays is watching games with my dad.
I started Gridiron Rush because of my love and passion for college football and writing. Since I love writing and football, I thought, why not start a blog and combine my passions. My blog has allowed me to make some pretty incredible friendships from all over the world. It has been a tremendous three-year journey, and I can not wait to see where my blog ends up in the future.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a woman in sports is not easy. After all, it is a male-dominated industry, and I was not going to let that stop me. I have been passionate about college football since I was a little girl. Due to my love and passion for the game of football, I decided to start a blog all about college football. I started Gridiron Rush 3 years ago and am so glad I did. My blog has allowed me to meet some pretty incredible people from all over the world and has allowed me to write about what I love most. College Football. Along my three-year journey, I have learned some pretty important lessons. I have learned that being a woman in sports has some challenges, but there are people always in your corner lifting and cheering you on. Women know sports, and they deserve a spot at the table too. I am incredibly blessed to have such fantastic role models in the sports world to look up to, like Maria Taylor and Laura Rutledge. Both have inspired me and have taught me that I belong in this industry too. Gridiron Rush has not only allowed me to share my love of college football with others, but it has also given me the platform to advocate for women in sports. I have met some pretty incredible women in the sports industry along my journey so far, and It is so amazing how women in this industry support one another.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Downtown Phoenix is a must-place to visit in Arizona. They have some great restaurants and coffee shops. My favorites are Blanco, Kettle Balck, and the Songbird Coffee and Tea House. They are also home to the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Phoenix Suns. I also really love Scottsdale. They have great restaurants like P.F. Chang’s and a great mall to shop at.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Being a woman in the sports industry is a difficult task at hand because it is a male-dominated field. My parents are my biggest role models and supporters. They have supported my blog since the beginning, and I honestly would not be where I am today without them. They inspire and motivate me every day and always push me to be the best I can be. They inspire me daily, and I am thankful for their knowledge and guidance along the way. My twin brother has also supported me on my journey from the beginning, and he has taught me to never give up on my dreams. I am very blessed to have such amazing people who support and believe in me!
