By far the most common conversation we have with the folks we interview is about work-life balance. Starting a business or pursuing a creative career makes finding work life balance really tough because there is no clear start and end to one’s work day. I think I’ve finally figured out the perfect work life balance for me. There are many highs and lows in the life of an artist, both emotionally and financially. The past few years have taught me to work very long hard days, weeks, even months during the busy times, and allow myself have down time to relax, and recharge when work is slower. I realize that the creative side of my brain really does need a rest to be productive and to come up with new, fresh ideas. Work life balance is a popular buzzword label right now, especially with more work-at-home jobs. It’s important and tricky at the same time and I think it’ feels right when you are in alignment with business pursuits, passion projects and personal connections. When my boys were young, I prioritized and scheduled-in sports and school things as if they were meetings and I made up my design work at off hours. Now that they’re grown, I work more consistent hours, travel with my husband for some of his business trips (since we’re in the same industry), but I am also careful to allow time for self-care to maintain physical and mental health.
