We had the good fortune of connecting with Adele L. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adele, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When you wake up, do you ever have that depressing thought, “I hate my job and I don’t want to go anymore”? Well, that was me, all of the time. I was overworked and underpaid as they say. I was working a 9-6 job, I was a full-time university student, and a single mother all at once. My friends and family told me I had talent like my grandfather with photography so in 2011 I started a small photography business on the side. (Just another job to add to my list) Within 6 months I was making more than my In-Office management job. So I did what any insane person would do & I quit my job. I have been successful ever since.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My name is Adele and I am the owner & main photographer of E.M.C.

Photography Studio. My customer base is Weddings and Model Styled Photography. I absolutely LOVE what I do. I started my business from nothing and turned it into a Full-Time career within 6 months. Was it easy? HA! Nope. People talk about putting their sweat & tears into their business, well, I added my humility. I woke up one day & quit my 8-5 knowing full well, that I was a full-time university student and a single mother, Oh! and broke. Did I mention I had $22.00 in my account? So no, it definitely was not easy. Honestly, I don’t believe any business really is, easy. That was my biggest challenge. I knew I had to make it successful no matter what. I needed to take this ‘hobby’ and turn it into something, anything that would pay my bills and keep a roof over my child’s head. And I did. I worked so hard to get where I am today. What I want the world to know about me and my business is; My business is 100% self-made. I have never taken a loan, I am licensed and yes, I even pay my taxes. I do everything by the book and I am happy to say here & now that I am damn proud of myself. So if any of you are looking to start a photography business, maybe don’t use my technique. Maybe have a couple of business plans in mind first, ya know?

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My business and I are based in Yuma, Arizona. I love living here and if my best friend came here for a week I would make sure they experienced the Imperial Dunes and Glamis, I would show them the river (even though there is not much left) and take them to my favorite restaurant, Da Boyz. We would shop the best mom & pop’s on Main Street and with some luck, may even be able to see a Main street event. Yuma may only have 90k permanent residents but when we all get together it’s always a great time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The main person who deserves credit for my photography is my grandfather.

Even at the age of 8, he would trust me with his camera and he would praise me for my efforts. I had his support until his last breath. Sometimes I miss that smile & his “Great job kid” statements. I also need to express that credit to every Customer & Model who has crossed my desk these last 12 years. Every single one of them has brought me joy, laughter, and overall gratitude. I would not be the business I am today if it wasn’t for them.
