We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex “Chili” Jankowski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex “Chili”, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued a creative career because it’s all I really know how to do. That’s just how my mind works.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I love the idea of a Shoutout series. “Self Made” never made sense to me. There is no such thing. Even if its just your first customer or client, there’s always someone. I have a whole list. My Grandparents helped me with money for beauty school ten years ago which started my professional career. Roberto Gonzalez, my daughter’s father, has been the best dad any girl could ask for which made it easier for me to pursue my goals. Andy Garcia of ADR construction pushed me for years in business and to move to Arizona. Molly Wilson was the one to pick me back up when I hit some early lows. Isaac and Lily Marker helped fill my family void when I was home sick and continue to show me so much unconditional love. Antionette Cauley not only introduced me to the art world of Phoenix but has also become one of my best friends. Alexander-Marcel Johnson, the owner of Redds Barbersalon, has shown me what true leadership looks like and is probably the most caring and selfless person I know. The whole crew at Redds (Jimmy, Nigel, Lamar, Fred, Dietrich and Alex) are not only my co workers but have become my family. And finally local comedian and barber Dietrich Rashad of Wow He Said That. He not only made sure there was a chair for me at Redd’s when we both left our previous shop but he also hired me on as the photographer for his and Phillip Jewel’s comedy productions which Ultimately lead to more amazing relationships. The community here in Phoenix is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. The connections that happen here are priceless. I’m so thankful for everyone I have met and worked with.
