We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Schreer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, what do you attribute your success to?
As a creative director, working primarily in the film and photo commercial space, I tend to work on a variety project ranging across many industries and products. I strongly believe that one of the most important factors behind finding success and in my own case, has been curiosity. Curiosity as in my desire to seek out knowledge on what ever topic or subject I am working around, in both macro and micro context. You have to understand that everyone you come across in your life has their own perspective and knowledge and in many cases they are open to sharing that with you, you just have to ask the right questions, thats were curiosity comes into play. In fact some of my projects that I thought I wouldn’t have any interest for have become some of my favorite pieces because I’ve taken away new insight from them. Each and every experience we have can build up our toolkit for the next one. My own curiosity has led me to meet amazing people to add to my network, learn new skillsets, and find inspiration in just about anything. Success is not something that is earned overnight, and to be truthful I don’t know if I have fully manifested what I would consider success, as its a constant progression to improve. So the best advice I can pass along is to stay curious, remain humble in the right that you don’t know everything, and don’t be afraid to mess up because curiosity always leads to a new discovery.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a creative director, I get to over see the process of the creation from its earliest spark to the final product and how we get to interact with it, whether physical, digital, or experiential. Im a classically trained Industrial Designer (product designer) with a background in graphic design, so how I found my way into media space is a bit of a back and forth. But for me my biggest approach when creating a photograph or film, is to start with what we are trying to communicate or what problem we are helping to solve, this is my design background coming into play. I like to think about what emotions we want the viewer to feel or interpret from the work, and then look at the logistics to accomplish that. Im fascinated by what I refer to as real humanity, and the grey area between culture and instinct. Im always aiming to communicate a human element in my work, but perhaps with a unique story arch, my least favorite part about many modern films is predictability. Hands and interactions between people are fascinating, I am a true hardcore people watcher, and in doing show love creating narratives or story’s about what brought that person to this very moment in their life. The wheels are always turning. One of them most challenging aspects I currently face is balancing the time between creative ventures and the business at this time, as my business and supporting others artistic visions has become more of a priority. Reelbros Media produces a lot of content for agencies, directors, and companies, and its rare I ever get to fully influence a project. Which is why I think its important to keep some projects on the back-burner in my mind so that when time can be afforded they can see the light of day. I think the most important thing to know about the creative process is everyone can be creative, but not many know how to direct that energy, thats kind of where my role comes into play, to help guide the process and put ear marks on interesting insights to explore so that we can get the best result for our clients.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a very interesting question to be answering during a global pandemic but I’ll do my best. I feel like Phoenix has much to offer, however it’s not on the surface it requires a little work to seek it out. Over the past few years our restaurant culture has grown a lot of outside influence, I’ve always been a fan of upward projects and the Fox Restaurant concepts because of their wholistic vision and execution. They also have restaurants for almost every genre. Arizona in general is one of the most geographically diverse states so a few hours drive in any direction can bring you a totally different landscape. Many of our productions have us exploring the back-countries south of phoenix, and north near Sedona, living in a place like this its important to take advantage of the wide outdoor vistas and mountains. Its great for decompressing or finding some inspiration plus its very social distancing friendly. I think there is a culture in this city for everyone, and if it doesn’t exist theres plenty of room to create it. The more people move here the more diverse it gets and outside influence comes to blend with our western roots. I can’t wait to see what it develops into over the next few years. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a lot of people I would like to give credit to throughout my life for inspiring me, educating me, and supporting me. However at this very moment in time I would like to focus on my two business partners, John Hebrank and Brandon Main. Thank you for taking that leap with me three years ago, trying to take our idea and turn it into a business and hopefully our full time career. From the late nights, early mornings and weekends, its truly been a 24/7 gig manifesting our goals. Though there have been moments were it felt like we would kill each other, we make it our priority to overcome, because three minds are stronger than one. Without our combined effort our media production company Reelbros Media would still just be an idea. We’ve come from working on small time videos locally to working on larger national and international ad campaigns in only three years. Theres a lot of time behind that journey and we’ve probably spent more time together working then we have with our own friends, family, and significant others. When it comes down to it, there’s no two other people I’d want by my side through the thick of it, and we have the time of our lives doing what we do, so I know its exactly where we are supposed to be.
