We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Rodman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Allison, what principle do you value most?
The following core values guide the work of our team:
• Love your work.
• Learn with intention.
• Build your capacity and that of others.
• Make an impact on the world.
• Surround yourself with the people who mean the most to you.
• Embrace healthy living – of mind, body, and spirit.
We believe that we are all continuous learners and there are endless possibilities to push ourselves (and others) to grow.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In the world of education, schooling, and learning in general, we spend most of our time focusing on student learning. Much less time is spent examining and refining adult learning practices even though training, workshops, and continued development are an essential component of the success of most businesses. The reality is that most adult learning sessions currently being delivered are misaligned to the research and practitioner experiences we have curated about how adults learn best. Even in the education space, adult learning (in most cases) is simply poor. My work has focused on the planning, design, and facilitation of adult learning in a way that is personalized, purposeful, and paradigm-shifting. We can no longer settle for “one-size-fits-all, sit and get” professional development sessions as the standard of learning for adults. Professional learning cannot be a meeting or event stacked with content to be “covered,” but instead, must be an experience to be artfully facilitated.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have collaborated with districts, schools, and organizations internationally so this is a fun question. However, it’s also a challenge to narrow down to one place. If I had a full week with no other commitments, I would mostly likely escape with a friend to Florence, Italy. We’d enjoy a glass of wine at the Golden View Bar overlooking the Arno and Ponte Vecchio at sunset, shop for an amazing handbag, have dinner at Il Vivandiere, and enjoy late night cocktails and some gelato at Caffe Gilli while watching the lit carousel and people strolling about Piazza della Repubblica. The next morning, we’d take a boat trip to Cinque Terre and walk through the streets of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Monterosso, and Vernazza. We’d spend the following day at the Uffizi Gallery, Boboli Gardens, climbing to the cupola and across the hidden terraces of the Duomo, and watching the sunset over the city from Piazzale Michelangelo. We’d eat gnocchi in Piazza Santo Spirito and walk around the city watching the fountains dance at night. We’d explore both basilicas and side streets in equal measure, fill ourselves on charcuterie, and soak in the street entertainment. Places aren’t just meant to be visited, but rather, experienced.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To every individual who has wanted to become more but needed some guidance, a nudge, or maybe even a shove to make it happen and accelerate your growth – this is for you.
