We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Allison, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Bookmans takes great pride in being active participants in our communities. Bob Oldfather, our founder, always said he never had a grand vision for Bookmans. It was never about money for him. He really just wanted a cool place to hang out. So, that’s what we aim for every day. The most important factor behind our success is our vibrant, diverse, fun-loving community.
Obviously, we have the entertainment exchange. We literally wouldn’t be able to stock our shelves without our customers who bring in their used items to trade. But more than that, our community is what makes Bookmans a really cool place to hang out. It’s why we offer in-store events and partner with other organizations in our neighborhood.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Like many of my fellow co-workers, I fondly remember growing up with Bookmans. Before the Phoenix location even opened, my family would pile into the car and drive all the way from Glendale to Mesa, just to visit Bookmans. One of the things I really love about working here is the sense of family because almost everyone, customers included, has a story like that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Bookmans, obviously! We have all kinds of free events happening in-store and virtually for all ages. In Phoenix, we’re also really looking forward to summer conventions; including, Mad Monster Party in July, and Game On Expo and MaricopaCon in August.
For the best locally-owned restaurants, definitely check out 19North and Local First’s community directories. This neighborhood has a lot to offer if you’re willing to drive past a chain restaurant.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to the 19North Community Alliance. 19North is a coalition of neighbors, government leaders, local businesses and fellow nonprofit organizations. Every person on the team is passionate about working toward a safe, walkable community that everyone can enjoy. They accomplish beautiful projects, like installing a community garden. Bookmans is proud to partner with 19North and we are looking forward to supporting their efforts in the future.
