We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Johnsen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amy, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Without risk there’s no reward. Life would be very boring without the ups and downs. That’s how we know we are alive and living. With risk comes the potential for failure but the way I see it is that failure is an illusion. There’s only lessons and it’s up to each individual person to create the meaning behind their own personal experience. In my life I don’t look at anything as a risk. I just follow my heart and intuition and it’s only brought me closer to my goals and dreams. Starting my own business with zero money in the bank, no one to lean on if it didn’t work but the drive to get out of toxic salon environments and away from damaging and abusive bosses was my drive. I believed in myself enough to go for it and to me whether my business continues to thrive and grow or not, is worth it. Loving myself enough to walk away from environments and people who aren’t good is reward enough. And I’m happy to say I’m not slowing down or moving backwards.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m different then most stylists. I don’t follow the status quo and am always questioning the norm. From the products I use to the color lines and the way I cut and do color, I create art on my clients heads and my focus is on healing more than anything. Whether that’s emotionally talking to me about things they share with no one to the actual hair on their heads. This industry is just like everything else in this world, saturated with people that are only in it for the money, products that are filled with chemicals and unregulated, and innocent stylists just following the mold scared to create change needed. I’m here to break the mold.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely Charm Thai in downtown Chandler. Hands down best Thai food I’ve ever had. I would also love to go to the salt river in Mesa and Sedona is on my bucket list.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My clients who have been with me from the beginning and keep coming back and referring me. I wouldn’t have what I do without them supporting and believing in me and my art and business. My boyfriend for pushing me to get out of my comfort zones and be my best self, my mom for always being my Guinea Pig cheering me on no matter what from the lemonade stand when I was 8 to my business now. I would be lost without them.
