We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking? Life’s a risk carnal! I’ve never been one to shy away from something on account of risk. There is a little bit of uncertainty in everything that you do. If you let uncertainty stifle your growth then you won’t grow for very long. Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am fundamentally against the commercialization and commodification of streetwear and similar subcultures. I’ve seen countless local brands come and go over my years in the space because they lacked a backbone. Brands that further attributed to the gross commercialization of street. One of my favorite parts of coming up with the VNV identity was purchasing a huge canvas before going at it with some Montana cans and writing “VANDALS” hundreds of times. Over and over again. I needed to experiment with different kerning, form, and serifs. In the end I decided that a sans-serif VANDALS with a contrasting Didone typeface “Voleurs” (a la VOGUE magazine) would be best. I used to write my letter A with a high crossbar, however I was inspired by the infamous CHAKA to lower the crossbar. I settled on the handmade font for VANDALS because why the hell would I use a computer font to illustrate vandalism? I decided to use the VOGUE font for “Voleurs” because that’s exactly what I am doing; stealing it back.If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Central City. I just want to say that I was absolutely gutted last year when The Breadfruit and Rum Bar had to close their doors to dine-in guests. It was by far one of my favorite dining experiences in Phoenix and I HIGHLY recommend it to everybody reading this. I know that I will be first in line when they reopen. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
100% Zee Peralta. I’ve watched her creative trek through various platforms and mediums since the beginning. My observations of them were a big inspiration for me to take the leap of faith.
