We had the good fortune of connecting with Autumn Hines and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Autumn, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Most of our clientele are self employed individuals. They think a software is the answer to all their questions. Or they think that they can estimate figures for their taxes. Or write off deductions because they think it is a tax write-off. Tax law is not that easy. Bookkeeping goes hand in hand with taxes, so you really need to know the law in order to apply that to your business operations. The IRS is truly my boss. They hold us accountable for our clients to do the right and moral thing, which is follow tax law. We, tax preparers/bookkeepers, are required to keep our clients within the tax law rules and report accurately. Clients must be on board with this. Sometimes getting that point across is hard, but we make the process easy and we educate the client on how they need to move going forward. Our goal is to help them through the process and get them on the right path.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My first business started when I was just 22 years old. I had a partner in life that wanted to start his own sheet metal and air conditioning business. He knew the industry, but I did not. I had to work countless hours to understand my role and to make sure that I was on top of everything, AND PERFECTLY! Errors can put a business under, and it was my job to make sure that didn’t happen on the back end.
After years in the industry, I met fellow construction colleagues that struggled with the financial side of their business. When the market crashed in 2009, I decided to branch off and open my own accounting/bookkeeping business. I was able to help these businesses in the areas that they were struggling. I never looked back!
I would want the world to know that I am the most driven, hardworking, caring, empathetic and compassionate woman. I want to be remembered by my ability to put myself in others’ shoes and help them through their hard times and cheer them on in their good times.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many gems here in PHX!! I love supporting all the small businesses here and trying new things. Downtown has so many great new places to go check out. It always excites me to try new things!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this shoutout to my children who are also my fabulous employees. Without them, Mom & Pop wouldn’t be where it is today. I am so grateful to work with my family and have their support through it all.
I also think my clients that have been with me for years are a major part of our success. Through word of mouth and referrals, we have grown into something amazing.
