We had the good fortune of connecting with Barbara Blalock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Barbara, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“Teaching is the one profession that teaches all others” When you think about a teacher and the difference they make from this quote, teachers are valued in an even greater way. I think about where I would be today if it wasn’t for a teacher and I would honestly have to say that I could have never achieved much without the guidance, support and compassion from teachers in my life.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Treasures 4 Teachers is considered a Creative Reuse Center that supports teachers across the valley with new and gently used supplies for free to low cost. It is a unique and one of a kind concept in Arizona. It was not easy to start up, there were many obstacles from illness to a roof collapse that required us to start all over. However, with community support and perserverance we have succeeded. Today we are in a 20,000 square foot facility with a location in Tucson and the West Valley. We also have a Thrift Store where all proceeds benefit the teachers we serve. We currently serve just over 5000 teachers reaching about 150,000 students.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Rustler’s Rooste so that we could eat on the deck and enjoy the view of the city. It is such a unique restaurant and one of the first restaurants I visited when I moved to Arizona. We would also visit the Desert Botanical Gardens and of course the Phoenix Zoo. Those are my favorite spots to take family and friends when they visit.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family is the reason for my success, especially my husband. Without their support for the sacrifices we needed to take for me to start Treasures 4 Teachers, it would have never happened.
