We had the good fortune of connecting with Benjamin Moody and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Benjamin, what matters most to you?
As a 27-year-old co-founder of Seven Clean Seas, being true to my own “drum beat” and having empathy are my go-to principles for building this gig.

Empathy is huge, especially in what we’re doing – cleaning up the oceans and tackling plastic pollution. It’s not just about the environment; it’s about people and communities affected by all this waste. Whether it’s the communities closest to the issue, our partners, or the MNC’s companies we work with, having that understanding shapes how I build at Seven Clean Seas.

People are the heart of any business. Leading with empathy means really understanding where your team, clients, and communities are coming from. It’s about making decisions that not only hit our environmental goals but also look out for everyone involved.

Being a leader and following empathy as my key value, listening more than I talk it key. Everyone’s got something to bring to the table, no matter their background. Opening up to different perspectives fuels teamwork, sparks new ideas, and makes our projects scalable and sustainable.

Mixing empathy with knowing when to trust your gut, knowing when to allow data to make a decision or when to take external advice, has been instrumental in my personal growth as an entrepreneur.

What should our readers know about your business?
Seven Clean Seas is an organisation in love with the ocean focussing on implementing plastic removal projects tackling environmental and social issues. Seven Clean Seas’ goal is to remove 10,000,000 kilos of plastic –the weight of the Eiffel Tower– from the ocean and to become operational in the seven most plastic-polluting countries by 2025. So far, we’ve removed over 2.5 million kilos of plastic from our Oceans and we now formally employ over 87 people in the communities we operate.
To achieve our goals and create systemic change, we partner with businesses and individuals to co-create sustainability initiatives and targets that measure, reduce, and compensate for their plastic footprints.

Our unique plastic neutrality approach has allowed us to do this and that, as well as working alongside the 2022 Football World Cup as their plastic offset partners. If you believe your organisation can make a difference, let’s jump on a call and figure out how we can bring solutions to the ocean together.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Currently Seven Clean Seas is based across three different countries and we operate with globally with our partners.

In Indonesia, Bali I would definitely recommend Amed. I highly recommend Amed in Bali, Indonesia. The breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture truly resonate with me, reminding me of the purpose behind my daily endeavors. It’s a place that encapsulates the essence of why I wake up and go to work in the morning. The serenity and beauty of Amed serve as a constant inspiration, fueling my passion and dedication.

If you are heading through Singapore then please visit Bintan or Batam island! They are a 40 minute boat ride and both of the seven clean seas facilities are located there! 🙂 Drop me a message if you’re interested to go.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wish to extend my sincere appreciation to the dedicated full-time plastic collection team at Seven Clean Seas. Their unwavering commitment and diligence in maintaining the cleanliness of our oceans serve as the cornerstone of our organisation. Without their tireless efforts, achieving our goals would not be possible!

In addition, I express profound gratitude to the companies that have collaborated with us. Their dedication to our shared vision of achieving a plastic-free ocean through measuring and reducing plastic waste as well as then compensating for it is highly commendable. Each partnership, irrespective of scale, plays a crucial role in advancing our collective objective, and we are deeply appreciative of your ongoing support.

The organisation are continuously seeking new alliances to join us in the pursuit of a world free from plastic pollution. Your involvement is pivotal, and we anticipate the prospect of collaborating to foster a cleaner, healthier future for our oceans. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to shaping and advancing our journey. 🌊🙌
