We had the good fortune of connecting with Bill Briles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bill, how do you think about risk?
I drove race cars for several years and used to do high altitude mountain climbing. My wife competed in gymnastics at the national level and has always been an athlete. Art is in the same vein. You have to put yourself ‘out there’, which always involves risks (rejection, ridicule, etc.) but the reward of feeling very much alive is worth it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Our uniqueness is how we make our movies. We are self-taught and we are often cast and crew, which includes all pre-production, production, and post-production (writing, editing, scoring, etc). We have been making movies for 18 years and we always have one in the works. On average it takes us 2 to 3 years to complete a movie. It’s a habit we can’t seem to stop.

Most of our movies have a philosophical layer as well as a comedic layer. Our last movie, “Thomas A Peeper” had a cast of 14 which will be released in 2023. The movie we are presently shooting “My High School Girlfriend, Your Wife”, is totally us; pre-production, production, and post-production. We are the cast, crew, music department, housekeepers, etc., etc.. There are 8 characters in this movie. “A Private Dancer in Mom’s Kitchen”, now on Amazon is also entirely us with 11 characters. There may be other filmmakers where there is only one or two people involved in the total process of making a feature, but I’m not aware of any.

We have had movies on Netflix, Amazon Prime and a fairly wide range of other streaming services. Aleta is a songwriter and performer and I’m also a painter-sculptor. We usually use our art in our movies as it saves the hassle of copyrights, permissions, etc..

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’re both in love with Tucson and I may be a little more in love than Aleta. I’ve visited several spots on the earth and have never found one that compares to Tucson. Hikes in Sabino Canyon (foothills of the Catalinas) provides beautiful terrain and wildlife which is especially nice during the winter months. We live in an area where javelina, deer, and coyotes are regular visitors.

Mt. Lemon is only a 30 mile drive and provides a place to hike that is significantly cooler in the 100+ summer months. It is a place to walk in the pine trees if you miss the woods and there is usually snow in the winter.

Hotel Congress is a great place to visit on Sundays as they have live music and a great crowd which includes interesting people. The people may be even more interesting on 4th Avenue just down the street. People-watching is a favorite for us and downtown Tucson provides a great opportunity for this. Shea’s is a favorite bar with reasonable beverage prices. Caruso’s is a long-time traditional Italian restaurant downtown on 4th Avenue. Great atmosphere eating inside and outside. Lasagna and salad are our favorites.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Even though we are creative partners, my wife Aleta is the person I would like to dedicate the Shoutout to. She is absolutely the most tolerant person I have ever known (i.e., equipment strewn throughout our house, serves as a model for painting, shoots video in some very uncomfortable situations, (extreme heat and cold), dancing on table-tops for the camera, etc., etc.). It’s her love and encouragement that keeps the process going.
