We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Derrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandon, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
My name is Brandon “King Brando” Derrick. I was born in Dallas, Texas my mom always encouraged creativity in my life and also my sisters life. Watching my parents work hard to give us the things we needed to be successful instilled a great work ethic within me. While mentioning my upbringing I can’t help but bring up my older brother Joshua Ramirez as well for always pushing me to be better and do more. They all shaped who I am today.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I remember picking up a camera for the first time. In 2010 I bought a camera in Afghanistan because I wanted to find beauty in the world after seeing the effects of war. It took a lot to get to the space I’m at right now and it was hard simply because I had to do it all on my own when a lot of people around me weren’t as encouraging as my family and close friends. I overcame the challenges by simply doing what made me happy. I stopped worrying about pleasing others and focused on displaying the beauty in my art solely for me. I learned over time that a person should remain true to themselves, do what makes them happy and to not be afraid of failing. I started a clothing line along side of my photography and I failed multiple times. With failure comes a lot of good lessons.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff and Sedona. Restaurant wise something we would for sure have to check out is Hideaway House. I would say Flagstaff has the most fun and interesting people considering I enjoy snowboarding and that’s where I’ve met some super cool individuals.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would say my parents Kevin Derrick and Dana Franklin along with my siblings Joshua Ramirez and Shontae Jackson are a huge portion of my success. My friends Kyle Lalab, Zach Jocewiz, Tyler Smith, Brent Grogan, Frank Martinez, and Christian Monteverde all played a huge part in me becoming the person I am today. They all deserve credit.
