We had the good fortune of connecting with Brianne Goodine and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brianne, what makes you happy? Why?
My small business, Root to Happiness, began because there was something missing in my life. In turn, I decided to pursue what made me happiest and began this incredible journey. First and foremost, growing and nurturing plants make me happy. I have been a gardener for a long time, whether it was vegetables, herbs, or house plants. Now, flowers are my thing! Then, making others happy makes me happy. When someone grabs onto a bouquet of your flowers it is gratifying to see their mood change in an instant. Also knowing that your flowers are used in celebration, rememberence, or gift giving are special moments as well. Next, being a stewardess of our little slice of New Hampshire brings me great joy. Every single day I walk out my back door with so much intention. Our impact on the land is more significant than many realize, and I take this to heart with everything that I do with my business. Lastly, but absolutely not least, is family makes me happy. Life is far too short and I know that I want to spend every moment possible with the people (and dogs) that I love. Root to Happiness gives me the flexibility needed to be at home and with my family every single day. These are the routes to my happiness.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Root to Happiness is a micro flower farm in southern New Hampshire. Flowers are grown on about a quarter of an acre, soley in the field or raised beds, at the complete mercy of mother nature. Sustainability is of utmost importance when it comes to both growing and arranging my flowers. No pesticides, chemicals, or harmful fertilizers are used, and materials are recycled or repurposed wherever they can be. I sell my flowers through a bouquet CSA, farmers markets, and local shops.

The start to my business was a little unconventional. I began three years ago on our urban lot with a couple raised beds and a neighbor’s yard. The next year, I grew on an additional property. I was driving all around town to tend to my flowers and called it my ‘floating farm’. Today, I am fortunate to be settled on a new property in the suburbs and growing all of my flowers out my back door. I began this business because nothing else that I did felt “right”. I’ve acquired a couple of educational degrees, held many different jobs, but I was ultimately a lost soul. My point is, three years ago I did not have the best plan or the best means, but I knew that I needed to follow my gut and dive into flowers. I am incredibly happy I did.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
At the start of my business when we lived in Worcester, MA, we had a lot of favorites spots! Currently, we are new to southern NH.

My husband and I frequented breweries like Greater Good and Redemption Brewing. We adored Armsby Abbey and Birch Tree Bread Company for brunch. The Worcester Public Market was an amazing addition to the city, as well as Polar Park. For shopping, Crompton Collective was my favorite, and we also lived down the street from the Burncoat Center for Arts and Wellness which is Worcester’s only refillery.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It all started when I read about the Floret Flower Farm story. One day I learned all about Erin Benzakein and her journey and I was immediately ALL IN with flowers! She started from humble beginnings and followed her dreams to eventually become one of the most influential figures in the flower farming world. Her story was the beginning of my inspiration and the reason I dove in.

Every day I continue to be inspired by other flower lovers around me. Flower farmers (or atleast all the ones I have met) are just good people and great to connect with. Sharing, learning, and experimenting alongside friends in your industry is powerful and grounding. Becoming a part of the flower community provides me with endless inspiration.

I also need to recognize my friends and family. I have been on one interesting journey to land where I am. They have never waivered in their support and there is no doubt that Root to Happiness would not be possible without them.

Lastly, I simply would not be where I am today without my husband. He is my biggest supporter, the yin to my yang, and the best farm hand there ever was (even though he didnt sign up for it)!
