We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittanie Billberry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittanie, why did you pursue a creative career?
Hair is a craft I’ve always gravitated towards. From a child playing with dolls to having something to do as I hung with friends in high school. It’s a soothing feeling for my hands to be in hair. There’s so much math and chemistry that goes into cosmetology and there’s always something being recycled and new to learn.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a cosmetologist there’s so much competition and there’s so many things to know and learn. I think what sets me apart from most is my willingness to go the extra mile for each and every client. My brand is built off of the comfort and the healthier side to hair. While I strive to meet every clients expectations I’m educating and walking them through the process of the entire service. Whether it’s their first or 50th visit. It’s the little things like the scalp massage at the shampoo bowl or placing the tool in their hand and guiding them on the use, to me that can go a long way.

Something I’m proud of would be the fact that even when I’m not behind the chair, I’m constantly learning. Paying and taking additional classes, watching tutorials, practicing on a mannequin. Continuing education is so important in this industry. There’s always a new technique. Styles are always being recycled it’s good to know a fair balance of them all. I believe the moment I stop pursuing education in this field then it’ll be time for me to move on to something else. Until then, it’s a world of hair that needs to be tended to.

I think I’m at where I am today simply due to my work ethics. I’ve always been a hard and dedicated worker even before hair and that still has not changed. I’m up at 5am every morning 6 days a week working towards the even bigger goal which is to one day open a black owned hair care store.
It’s definitely been an eventful journey. The first year alone I thought I had made a mistake building the confidence to build a clientele isn’t always an easy thing. Your literally asking people to trust with one of their most valuable possessions and 1 mistake can make or break an entire client/stylist relationship. Word of mouth definitely goes along way so I’m always striving to do my best. One of the biggest lessons I have learned and I do a lot better coping with is that you can’t pleased them all no matter what measures you try to take in order to do so. Either way I’m here to stay.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a major hot wing head! I love hot wings so we’re definitely stopping at Long Wongs for an inexpensive meal of wings fries. Maybe hit The Lola at Westgate for brunch (I love their flight mimosas). If she loves seafood as much as I do we definitely got to get a little messy at Angry Crab. For a weeks stay we’ll probably do a lot of cooking and Sprouts and Albertsons are my go tos. Depending on the time of year I love going up north to Sedona. Grasshopper canyon is 1 hell of a trail for me but once you arrive it’s so peaceful and relaxing, I love Slide Rock as well. I love a good farmers market so we’ll definitely hit one up. Maybe do a hot air balloon ride or even hit the Grand Canyon, I’m a native of Arizona and I’ve never been!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents are truly the real MVPs. They both have been loyal clients from day letting me practice my craft and getting my kicks off. Not only that but they also have stepped in and help with taking care of my little girl while I work my long hours. It really does take a village to raise a child and for that alone I’ll always be indebted. I really love them.
