We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlin Kelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caitlin, why did you pursue a creative career?
From day one I knew I wanted a career in the art field. Growing up I attended art school and acquired new skills with each lesson. By the time I was a junior in high school I decided I wanted to be a graphic designer. Graduating at 17, I wasted no time and started to study for my BFA in Graphic Design before I turned 18! I went to school all year around and managed to graduate with my BFA in Graphic Design in 3 years. I absolutely loved it! After I graduated, I spent time working at consulting offices and print shops to acquire the knowledge I have today in the print and design industry. I always wanted to be my own boss, so in 2016 I started my design business, Copper Theory Creative. Copper Theory offers branding, design, and print services to small businesses. Taking a risk to start my own business was the best decision I ever made (just don’t tell my husband that since he thinks he is)! My version of changing the world is making your brand be seen in the best way possible, so you can change the world in your own way!

Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
You don’t have to be a starving artist. From day one I was aware of the stereotypical “struggles” of what an artist and small business owner could be. They told me that leaving my easy day job and transforming into a business owner working 24/7/365 would upend my life, and in art school they tell you that logo and brand design are the hardest gigs to become successful in. That didn’t deter me, but instead fueled me…I could just hear the voice in my head saying, “challenge accepted.”

Today, logo and brand design are the #1 service Copper Theory Creative provides. I realize that entrepreneurs are their brands and that is why I get to know you FIRST. Before the creative process even starts, I sit down with my new client and conduct a pre-designed interview. These questions are everything from preferred color palette to why you started your business in the first place. The answers can be used as social and web content for the customer and help identify key elements to be used in the design. During the interview I am also listening for key takeaways that make the vision come to life. Then we start designing! I believe this is what makes Copper Theory different. We get to know you, and I don’t design and run, but instead stay with you throughout your journey.

I help entrepreneurs make money by professionally amplifying their brand to represent their vision. I change the world by helping entrepreneurs have their brands be seen in the best way possible!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My husband and I just recently got back from a brewery tour across the US so I guess you can say we’re beer connoisseurs! We have many favorites in the Valley, so we would definitely start with a beer tour to a few of the best breweries/bottle shops like Arizona Wilderness and The Wandering Tortoise. Many people come to Arizona for the sights, so our next stop would be Horseshoe Bend or kayaking on one of the lakes. I absolutely love seafood and Italian cuisine, so our restaurant stops would be Harumi Sushi, Publicco Italian Eatery, and The Stockyards Steakhouse.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Wow! I have at least a Thanksgiving table size list of mentors to dedicate this to! My parents, Kristin Slice, Jackie Wszalek, Amber Griffiths, Tish Times, Erin Marcus and more!

They all have played very important roles in helping my business be where it is today. I thank them all for the support, advice, and knowledge that helped me become a successful business owner.
