We had the good fortune of connecting with Carmel Domond and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carmel, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
As cliche as it may seem these days, travel really makes me happy. My first trip to Haiti really opened my eyes to what we are missing when we stay planted in one location for much of our life. I absolutely enjoy being immersed in different cultures, meeting new people and taking on life’s adventure. Travel also makes me feel closer to God. I get this feeling that God is showing me that we are mere microcosms of the variations and beauty that we see in the world. It makes me appreciate life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started my career as an educator with little book knowledge on the profession however, I entered with a great deal of passion. Working with children and positively shaping their minds is a part of my innate being. A wise man once said “I’m not saying I’m gonna change the world, but I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will change the world.”-Tupac Amaru Shakur I wholeheartedly believe this when I encounter young people that are hungry for true knowledge of self. I know that if I can defy the odds by empowering young people that are systematically set up to fail, then I have completed my life’s work.
While my role on paperwork may say “teacher”, I consider myself an educator. These two are used interchangeably, but I do not see them as one and the same. The definition of a teacher is “one that teaches; especially: one whose occupation is to instruct,” while an educator is defined as “a person who gives intellectual, moral, and social instructions.” It is imperative to educate young people about who they are due to the fact that knowing thyself is the foundation of critical thinking. When one does not know who they are, they are incapable of skillfully formulating ideas and views.
One thing I can say about myself is that I’ve always been a leader and an educator. Over the years I’ve gone from educating middle school students to educating adults near and far. Over the years, the knowledge I’ve gained and the urge I’ve had to share has stretched beyond what I could imagine. It’s extremely humbling to know that people in the world have read or listened to my journey of life. I want the world to know that I create to inspire and educate on the subject matters that have been hidden truths.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If we are talking about Arizona, I would definitely take my best friends to Sedona! I know they would appreciate the pulchritude of the views just as much as I do. Starting in Sedona, we’d hike a few trails, do some meditation at the spiritual vortexes, and of course take all the pictures a girl can take! We’d also visit some local shops that carry items with healing properties. I mean who doesn’t love crystals, sage, herbs, and aromatherapy!?!
Ok so shameless plug here! I recently released an ebook that provides a week-long itinerary for Arizona(Sedona and Phoenix). If you’d like to read more of what my best friends and I would do in Arizona, please support by purchasing my “GOMELANIN TRAVELS: ARIZONA EDITIONS ” e-book which is linked below.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout my loved ones that have always motivated and encouraged me to go for my dreams! Sometimes focusing on myself and going for what I want requires me to practice extreme self-care. While doing so, I try to replenish myself without depleting others. Those that can understand the benefits and necessity of my self-care moments are forever my people. To Simone, Erika, and Robin, thank you for encouraging and providing me the much needed confirmation to take that solo trip. Arizona was my first solo trip and it was exactly what my spirit needed!
