We had the good fortune of connecting with Chayla (kay-luh) Langley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chayla (kay-luh), have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
There’s been a few times in my life where i’ve asked myself if I should give up or quit on my passions. Sometimes life throws some pretty heavy situations at you and you’re left with feelings of doubt. I’ve had moments in my business where I had to take a step back and really analyze whether I should just give up or keep going.

I had to be very real with myself and ask if what I am doing is truly fulfilling my life. Is what i’m doing negatively affecting my emotional health or were their other causes. I think that deep down you will know in your heart when it’s time to give up on something. But I don’t believe it’s ever quote on quote giving up. Life is full of lessons and experiences and if your business is aligning with who you are as a person, then you will know whether to keep going or move on to the next adventure life has to offer.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I come from a small town called Globe, AZ. Raised by my grandparents with two other siblings we grew up very poor and faced many challenges. We were abused and surrounded by toxicity. I used art as a way to overcome situations. Sitting in my room alone with pencil to paper brought me so much happiness and continued to for the rest of my life.

While I was interested in tattooing in High School I didn’t get my shot in the industry until after I had graduated college with a Bachelor’s in Media Arts and Animation. While the degree gave me a strong base in art fundamentals I knew I needed something more traditional. That is how I found myself reaching to my inner circle to find some tattooers willing to take me on. Thankfully they did!

Tattooing is one of the most challenging and rewarding things I have ever done. I truly enjoy connecting with people and bringing their visions to life.

I’m so proud of not giving up on it or my art when things got tough. It’s not an easy field to get into and it’s also not something that’s easily executed. The industry can be pretty brutal. It’s finally getting to a place where more women are respected as artists within the community. I’m very proud about pushing myself forward and not letting the intent of others stop me from pursuing my goals.

Tattooing is an experience you will remember the rest of your life. I’m so excited to be a part of that experience. I’m grateful to give people memorable moments that just so happen to come with some pretty sweet art!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being an artist I’m kinda of a homebody who loves to sit at home and watch horror movies. But when I do get out, I love to hike Papago Park. In the evenings you can catch the beautiful Arizona sunset and watch the planes take off from Sky Harbor.

Not far from there there’s this little whole in the wall place called Speedy’s Tacos. It’s a more laid back restaurant where you walk up and order/eat outside. I can assure you they have some of the best chicken burritos in town!

If you’re looking to nerd out and get a few drinks in you Cobra Arcade Bar in Phoenix is a great spot to grab some drinks, play some video games, and even get some dancing in!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We all need a little support sometimes. Whether it be emotional, financial, or what have you. I’d love to shoutout all the people who have followed my art for years and have watched me grow into the artist I am today. Shoutout to the tattoo artists who gave me a chance and accepted me into the community. Most specifically, Jared Phillips owner of Hyper Lucid Studios in Sun City with giving me a safe space to grow.

Big shoutout to my few close friends, because quality over quantity lol, who have been there through all the blood sweat and tears. Grateful for you all!
