We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsie McCormick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Is, “because I’m bossy” a good enough answer? Only kidding! Like most hairstylist I started out behind the chair in a big corporate company that had its own vision, its own ideas, and played by its own rules. But that was ok because it was everything I needed during that time! As a freshie out of school I was only prepared enough to handle the person in my chair, not the marketing, inventory ordering, and all the responsibilities that comes with running your own business. I was with that company for 10 years! Each year I would challenge myself to grow in every aspect of my personal and my professional life. I started to imagine my own vision, my own ideas, and my own rules. And than put in the work to make it happen. And thankfully I’ve always had the love, support, and encouragement from those surrounding me.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Salon29eleven is a hair salon here in Peoria where we offer many quality hair services to a pretty amazing clientele. I have always been told that our clients feel like they are more than “just a ticket” after a visit with us. We make sure that everyone that walks in our doors, feels safe, comfortable, and confident in any services and experiences with us. Something that I love about our salon, is that we love education! This industry it’s constantly changing and that’s exciting for us! Our salon wants to be know for its quality services to our clients, and as a safe work space where fellow stylist can come and continue to learn and grow! I joke to people that salon29eleven was created over night! And in some ways it was. Rewind back to Christmas 2 years ago, prepping for our busiest week of the year as stylist, only to find out our salon home of 10 years was closing. And to make things worse they couldn’t give us a timeline for how long we would have before the doors would be closed. We had to act fast! Either join another corporate salon or make the jump into entrepreneurship and build a salon of our own. We took that jump and in less than 2 weeks time we got a small space that we would now call our salon home. We had our last day at our old salon on a Saturday, set up our new spot on Sunday, and started seeing clients on Monday! Wild right? Moving furniture and decorating walls was the easy part! Building a name and brand is the hard part! We wanted a name that had value and meaning. During all the chaos of opening a salon we were always reminded of the verse Jeremiah 29:11. In this verse it talks about how God has a plan and a purpose for your life. And it brought so much comfort we knew we needed it! So Salon29eleven became official. It’s now been two year since opening and we are exciting to announce that we’re still growing. We are preparing a new space to bring in more team members and to continue in this adventure of ours. So we may joke that we started overnight but don’t be fooled, a lot of hard work and loves goes into building your own business.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I feel like whenever people come to Arizona they are always asking about our Mexican food!? So margaritas and bomb salsa would definitely be on our itinerary. What’s fun about where we live is a few hours drive in any direction and you can get consumed but an entirely different environment and atmosphere! To collage town life in Tempe or to the beauty and jeep tours of Sedona. Sounds like we’re pretty lucky!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh man! I love my tribe, my people. I could not be where I am without the love and support of my family, friends, and of course my business partners Brittany and Emylie.
