We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Harper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my business, Birth of Mars, was deeply influenced by my upbringing. Growing up, my father worked as a photographer for the Republican Party, exposing me to all the places a camera could take you at a young age. Despite this early exposure, it took me 26 years to purchase my first camera. The passing of a friend served as a catalyst, prompting me to start my legacy. During my travels overseas, I developed a profound connection to Greek Mythology, particularly with Aphrodite, also known as Venus. Inspired by Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus,” I named my business Birth of Mars, drawing parallels between the sensual allure from the painting to my images. The name “Mars” symbolizes my perception of Arizona; which lacks in fine art, motivating me to capture people in a way that mirrors the art I seek to emulate.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a lover of the sea, embracing my Martian roots. The name Birth of Mars was inspired by Sandro Botticelli’s painting, “The Birth of Venus,” where the newly born goddess stands nude, emerging from a seashell. Venus is the first fully nude woman depicted in a nonreligious painting, causing controversy, yet fascination, similar to the effect I want to give people with my images. Mars represents my roots, as I was born and raised in Arizona. I embrace the allure of the Mars-like landscape and honor the Western influence in my art.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Other than making them pose for me, Arizona is a great place with great weather. There is nothing better than a rooftop bar and a sunset.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without my best friend Tatiana. Her unwavering support and mutual passion for fine art have played a pivotal role in shaping my brand. She has always seen me as Venus and has always joked with me as such. Tatiana is truly the pillar that has helped shape my brand into what it is today.
