We had the good fortune of connecting with Cristina McClaren and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cristina, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by my son. He has always been a very driven person and the drive has only gotten stronger as he has gotten older. He’s played sports, specifically tackle football, since he was in kindergarten. He has always been one of the shorter kids and younger kids on the team. Instead of letting that bother him; he used it as fuel. He became one of the hardest workers on and off of the field. He’s 15, has good grades, plays multiple sports, helps with special needs children, and is training to become a barber. I admire how driven and dedicated he is as such a young age.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am still learning lessons and probably will for the rest of my career/life. I feel that my journey sets me apart from other health coaches, I know that health is more than just physical. I come from parents that had addiction issues which helped me to have the same issues. As a food addict I can relate more closely with clients that are dealing with the same issue. With my rollercoaster life experiences I am able to coach more authentication that not many other coaches have. I have overcome a lot of my challenges by focusing on me and my son. I had to stop worrying what others were doing and/or saying. I had to stop trying to be like other coaches and learn my own style, which I am still learning. I want the world to know that I am here to help others get healthier inside and out. I also want women to know that they can lift weights and still have sexy curves. They can lift weights without getting bulky. They can lift weights and feel proud.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Funny because my best friend and I were just talking about her coming out here to visit. I would take her to a baseball game because that’s one of my favorite places to be in the valley. Of course we would have to walk around downtown and look at the street art, too. I would take her to Rio Mirage Cafe in El Mirage because that is my favorite place to have Mexican food. We would also have to take a drive up to Sedona so we could enjoy the beauty.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to give credit to my gym, XGT Smart Gym in Peoria, AZ. They have amazing classes that helped to learn how to lift weights properly. The owner and staff have always encouraged me.
