We had the good fortune of connecting with Deacon Hayes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deacon, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always wanted to start a business ever since I was a kid. I remember buying a book at a thrift store for a quarter and then selling that same book at a bookstore in the same plaza for a dollar. I enjoyed finding ways to make money and eventually realized that it is even better to help people and make money at the same time. That is when I decided to pursue helping people make better financial choices by creating an online publication with content around making money, saving money and paying off debt.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started a website called WellKeptWallet.com back in 2010 as a way to share my story of paying off $52,000 of debt in 18 months. At the time, the only people that read it were my friends and family. Eventually I started to get news coverage of our story and more and more people started coming to the site. Now we get over 500,000 people per month to the site which is incredible. It wasn’t always easy though. There were times were are revenue got cut in half, however, because our overhead is low and we have no debt, we were able to weather the storms. We truly want to transforms people’s lives when it comes to their finances and because of that, we feel like there is a need in the marketplace for the kind of content we publish.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of the coolest places to go in town is Great Wolf Lodge. I took my family there earlier this year and was blown away. They have a ropes course, wave pool, and even a bowling alley. The restaurants on the premises were awesome and was just impressed that you could do so much in just one place.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I was struggling with money, I decided to look for people that were successful with money to learn from. That is when I found Dave Ramsey who had a daily radio show helping people work through their finances. I learned so much from him and am grateful for all the knowledge I learned from him.
