We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Denise, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I associate risk with fear. A lot of people allow fear to stop them, to control them, to dictate whether they “can’ or “can’t” do something. Fear is simply a feeling, a thought. We are not our thoughts. That fear is there to protect you from the possibility of failing or getting hurt. I say “thank you fear, for trying to protect me…but I’m going to go for it.” I chase the fear. I was terrified when I had to make the decision to take photography full time. I went out and got multiple job interviews. Before going to one, I was sitting at my desk and thinking about WHY I got these interviews…it was out of fear. I didn’t believe that I could do it, that God would provide or be faithful. So. I cancelled all the interviews and decided to go for it. I would rather fail at this and know I gave it my all then to never try. I think taking risks is crucial. Playing it safe doesn’t cause growth. You will never know what you’re made of if you’re always playing it safe.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I actually thought it’d be fun to ask my following some of these questions πŸ™‚ Sooo here’s some of their answers! What sets me/my work apart? Lighting! Candid shots, natural, fun. They are tailored to the moment. The brightness and clarity, the love and the passion, I can see through your photos! Really good lighting! They look magical and happy. QUALITY! You capture expressions beautifully, I feel like I’m looking at magazine photos! Why did you choose me!? Your passion, how real you are, and your willingness to go above and beyond for your clients. Your creative energy and the way you connect with each person and stay in the moment. How comfortable your couples are in your behind the scenes videos! Because you’re real, you’re not afraid to be who God created you to be. One word to describe my photos? Creative. Connected. Amazing. Bright. Real. Emotional. Natural. Energetic. Beautiful. Fun. FAST. Passionate. Spontaneous. Vivid. Real. I have not had the easiest journey thus far. I made the decision to move to Arizona from Oregon and start my entire clientele over from scratch. So I have been hustling my butt off πŸ™‚ The way I’ve overcame challenges is my refusal to give up. Adapt and overcome is the biggest lesson I’ve learned. I want people to know that they were not created to wake up and hate their life. To work for some one else’s dream. God has a purpose for you. Find what sets your soul on fire. Chase it. And don’t ever give up.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ohhh this sounds fun!! I would for sure go to Sedona. I LOVE Sedona. Take my dog too! Go on hikes, find amazing places for sunsets, eat good food! Then head over to Flagstaff, Horseshoe bend, Lake Powell, stop at small towns in between! I’m an outdoorsy person and I love adventure. So we’d for sure spend the entire time adventuring…maybe a spa day at the end πŸ™‚ Ironically enough, I’d probably leave my camera behind. I’m not that big into landscape photos and sometimes it’s nice not to always have to take pictures πŸ™‚

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All glory goes to God. This has truly been His purpose for my life. I didn’t go to school for photography nor did I ever dream of being a photographer. He put a camera in my hand and that’s how this happened. I always say it’s God’s grace and my grit & grind. I’ve worked very hard, and will continue to do so. But none of this would be possible without God.
