We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily & Lindsey Rieve & Schoenemann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily & Lindsey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We (Emily & Lindsey) met while teaching 7th grade math/science in Gilbert, AZ. We found that we worked really well together and loved collaborating. In 2016 Emily and her husband took a trip to France. While visiting a castle in France, they stumbled upon a self-serve wine tasting shop. Emily loved the idea and excitedly told Lindsey about the wine shop. We decided to leave education and pursue our passion by opening a self-serve wine bar in downtown Phoenix on Roosevelt Row. When we work together we are creative and innovative and we’ve loved building our business together. We also love supporting Arizona wine and other products. We’ve gotten to know a lot of the wine makers here in Arizona and want to showcase Arizona wines.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
GenuWine Arizona is a unique experience because we are a women-owned self-serve wine bar with a focus on local Arizona wine. But what really sets us apart is the customer experience. We pride ourselves on getting to know our customers and having lots of regulars. When we first started GenuWine, we googled “How to write a business plan” and went from there. Neither of us went to school for business and don’t have experience opening or running a business. However, we are both former teachers which taught us skills such as problem solving, flexibility, and management. We used these skills to push forward and never give up. Every hurdle we came across we figured it out together and just kept going.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Obviously GenuWine would be a big part of the itinerary! We also love all of the businesses on Roosevelt Row such as Elevate Yoga, Fair Trade Coffee, and Greenwood Brewery.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would love to shoutout everyone in our industry who has mentored and supported us along the way. All of the business owners on Roosevelt Row who have met with us and given us advice along with all of the people in the Arizona wine industry who have believed in our vision.
