We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Markowitz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, what’s your definition for success?
Success to me is whatever makes you happy, without causing harm to others, or the planet! Success is finding the source of joy, passion, and true love in what you do every day. Whether you are directly helping others, helping create stories, or inspiring others, you are adding good to the world. That is success for everybody.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a nurse, and a fairly young one if I say so myself. I finished Nursing school a few days after my 18th birthday and went straight into helping others. I learned so much, not just about myself but about others as well. Half the time I was praised for being so young and successful, the other half I was surprisingly pushed down for somehow still not being good enough. It was not easy to get to where I am now. I had to sacrifice a lot of my childhood, and young adult plans to pursue a better future for myself. However, even though all the sacrifice, I was still able to find time and energy to travel, try new things, and make myself happy. I think with all the challenges I went through; I look back and am so shocked with all that I’ve done and want others to know they can do it too.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were to come to my area (Stockton, Ca) the first thing we would do is drive out of the town. I’d take them to some nature hiking spots around the northern California area, probably go to Natural bridges, hidden falls hike, and see a lake. My favorite thing to do is go to a superstore grab a bunch of snacks and go to a drive-in movie!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really have to thank my best friend Ned, all of my “yes fam” and my partner Spencer, for all the support, love, and inspiration they give me. I’d also like to thank all my enemies, people that pushed me down, and told me I couldn’t do it, it only helped me push harder!
