We had the good fortune of connecting with Esther Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Esther, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to choose a “creative” career because I wanted to not only have my own business, but I also wanted to use my interest and skill in photography to help other people capture special moments in their lives. As a photographer, you’re able to work with clients from all walks of life from all over the country (and hopefully one day, the world.) At the age of 15, I started to gain interest in the world of photography. I got a job at a summer camp doing videography, which eventually led to me opening my business- Mitchell Photography. Having my own creative career, only bound by my own creativity. In the future, I hope to expand my business/brand enough where I hire aspiring photographers who want to also make a living doing what they love.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a young, aspiring photographer, I believe what sets me apart from other photographers is how personal I am with my clients. When people book a session with me, they are not just paying for photographs- they are paying for an afternoon filled with laughter and fun! When I first started, I mainly did photos for friends and family for free. Eventually, when people started asking how much I charged for photos- I never realized that individuals would be willing to pay for my work. Starting out definitely wasn’t easy, and there were many times I wanted to give up and get a “regular job”. However, with the support of my friends and family- I able to overcome the doubt I had about doing photography full time. As I started to book more sessions regularly and began to build my brand, I had to learn the importance of managing my time and also knowing the value I had. I used to feel bad for charging people for photoshoots- but now I know what I do takes talent and time and it’s worth paying for. If there was one thing I could tell the world about my business is that once I stopped comparing myself to others is where I truly found success.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For sure Luana’s Coffee! Such a cute coffee shop and perfect place for a date or to study. As for restaurants, I highly recommend Bobby-Q’s! Perfect for big groups! Finally, I can’t think of a better way of spending a Friday night than hitting up the dance floor at Scootin Boots in Mesa!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank my friends and family for all of their love and support of my business throughout the past couple of years, as well as God for blessing me with the opportunities He’s given me.
