We had the good fortune of connecting with Gauthier Raad and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gauthier, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think is one of the most exciting things in our lives. We are taught to avoid risk. I am gonna talk about my own experience but I am sure that my example applies to a lot of people.
I was taught that to be successful in life, I have to have a steady job, behave in a certain way, dress in a certain way, talk in a certain way, accept things the way they are and not question them… For some reason, this analogy didn’t not work well with me. I felt that this way of seeing things/life is not meant for me but at the same time I didn’t have the alternative… This is where risk begins: we feel that this is not what we are nor what we want. It is getting out of our comfort zone and moving into an unknown place of being… It is risk. I encourage people to take this risk. It is not gonna be comfortable in the beginning (it could be sometimes). Risk is when I decided to continue alone the Lebanese Independent Film Festival when the main partner left (It wasn’t called that way back then). I said to myself, this is what I want and I am gonna do it. Did I have any idea how to do it? Absolutely no. But my will helped me do it. Plus, we are all learning here, life in itself is a learning process. So if you feel that you know it all, please try to avoid hanging out with me or around me. This is risk. Risk brought me where I am now… 7 years of beautiful and prestigious film festivals, projects and experiences. Risk took me to several countries where I met a lot of interesting people. Risk sometimes dragged me down… but helped me see and discover who I really am ( I still have a lot to discover thought). Sometimes we feel taking more risks and sometimes less… Listen to your intuition. Our intuition won’t ever lie to us.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think each artists is different, each project is different… We are different people. This is why it is our responsibility to tell people to stop comparing artists, project and art in general. This is why I can’t give you an answer on what sets me apart from other.
Each one of us has a story, this is why each one of us has something original to say.
I have lived in several countries and travelled a lot. well there are advantages and disadvantages along the way.
One of the big challenges that I still face everyday is the fact that most people expect to deal with people who resemble to them… People get scared when they see someone coming from a different culture, what about seeing someone who doesn’t correspond to any of the cultures they know? I have lived in several countries, I don’t identify with one culture. People gets scared when they don’t know you, when they don’t know in which category or case they have to put you in…
I think this is our challenge in this century… breaking stereotypes… and breaking social stereotype isn’t always a pleasant thing to live.
I have learnt to love myself as I am. To love my mixed origins and cultures as they are. To accept them first and accept that I am different and EMBRACE IT.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them for a long walk at the beach at sunset…
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This shoutout goes to all the people who told me that I can’t do it. This goes to the religious sisters who told me that I can’t do it when I was a kid.
This goes to all my friends who bullied me at school.
This goes to all my family member who believed in me and didn’t believe in me.
This goes to all the teachers who gave attention to rich kids and forgot about us.
This goes to all my university professors who judged me sometimes only for what I look like.
This goes to all the employers who were doing everything to make me doubt myself.
This goes to all the hypocrite people ( that I met) who were doing the opposite of what they were supposed to do.
This goes to all the partners who backed out of my projects.
This goes to all my the people who used me in a way or another.
This goes to all the people that are jealous from success in general.
This goes to all the people who still want to separate, divide and create wars.
This goes to anyone who thinks that they can stop me and stop anyone else.
YOU INSPIRE ME!
