We had the good fortune of connecting with George Karakasidis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi George, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Back in 2016, while waiting in my car for the traffic light to turn green, I
saw some palIt'sm trees across Poseidonos Avenue in Athens, which
reminded me of numerous movie scenes in Beverly Hills or Hawaii. I
took a picture instantly and made a collage later back home with a
picture of similar palm trees in the famous U.S. Island. A few weeks
later, while walking in a forest in West Greece, the scenery I saw
made me feel being in Twin Peaks, the imaginary weird town of the
iconic 90s TV show of David Lynch. I thought: “if they can do it (i.e.
shoot films/TV shows), why can’t we”? Thus, I decided to create an
Instagram Account which compares Greek landscapes to similar ones
around the world that have been used as film sets or could be
potentially used in the future. In order to support the whole project, I
wrote an article in my blog in Medium, highlighting this artistic and
financial opportunity for my country (after all we have been in deep
recession since 2010).
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I owe a lot to my strong imagination and thinking outside the box, skills
that are not always easy to cultivate in an overly pragmatic and
technocratic world. However, if you follow a structured approach and
methodology, coming up with new ideas can always prove to be
socially beneficial. It is highly important for me to find ways to express
my creativity and I manage this through photography, copywriting in
advertising and innovative projects like Greeceinthefilmworld.
Regarding the latter one, I believe that every good story needs a good
place to be presented. This project helps artists and people from film
industry discover such good places to present their stories.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
After visiting Acropolis and Thissio, I would take them to Nafplio a
destination less than 2 hour away from Athens. Alluring narrow streets, cozy cafes, restaurants by the sea and a 17th century castle
are some of its key highlights. It’s no accident that this is one of the
most favorite spots for Art students in South Europe.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
People posting interesting things on Social Media. As everything in
life, Social Media has some positive and negative effects. Regarding
innovation and spreading new ideas, it has given voice to people that
otherwise would never be heard. I find it really exciting that people
from around the world can send me their pics so that I use them for
collages that can be shown globally. This kind of interaction is really
admirable.
