We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelby Tuerr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shelby, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I believe there are no rewards without risk. Honestly my life has been full of moments I had to take a risk to get to where I am today. At the age of 25 I basically cleaned house in everything to start over again. I left a long relationship, left a high paying job to ultimately move back home and go to cosmetology school. Little did I know, I’d truly find myself through this journey and start my own business. I then was diagnosed with a rare disease and was faced with the choice of getting surgery to remove parts of my colon due to cancer, being advised I may not have children if I did. I chose the surgery and now have a 6 month old little girl. Point being, my choices of risk have always paid off and led me to where I am today but also, play a huge part in who I am. I live by the motto life is short, make every moment count.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When someone places themselves in my chair, there’s a reason behind it and it’s not only to get their hair done. I believe everything happens for a reason and I aim to positively impact every person I cross paths with. I think what stands me apart from the other stylists that do the same thing, is my energy and passion for my clients. I dont just take color straight out of a tube and apply it to hair. I personally mix all my own formulas and colors specifically for my client and I aim to give them a confidence boost by the time they leave my chair. I’m also spiritually in tune and love offering guidance when asked. I have clients text me at all times of the day and night simply because they need an ear to listen, not even about their hair, im there for them. It hasn’t been easy to open a business as not only a new mom, battling my own health issues and also in the middle of a pandemic but I have so many goals that I know I’m going to achieve, so I’m just going for it. I’ve been negative in my bank account at times when a client feels inclined to give me a bigger tip, things have found a way to work out and I truly feel blessed. I’ve learned so many lessons along the way, from taking care of my self to knowing my worth so I don’t get taken advantage of. If I could survive giving everyone free hair I would, sadly I can’t and need to fend for my family too. I want the world to know that my brand stands for authenticity, for being unique, for standing comfortable in your own skin. I’m not your average hairdresser, you’ll feel a boost of energy and empowered while sitting in my chair. Every traumatic thing I’ve gone through is to help someone else conquer their own battles so I will continue to not only do hair but motivate everyone around me to live their best life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ll say this is pre covid and everything is open. My absolute favorite spot in Arizona is honestly, anywhere out in nature. I absolutely love the Superstition Mountains and the hike is challenging but rewarding once you see the view from from top. An absolute must for food and drinks would be a sports bar in Chandler called BKDs. The owners are so friendly and the menu is delicious, not your typical bar food, I reccomend this place to almost everyone. A regular go to activity I love is dancing and Schenpf farms in Queen Creek has outdoor dancing in the barn, just a good time with cheap drinks and good music. If I wanted to go exploring, I’d take anyone to the art district in Phoenix. So many buildings covered in beautiful murals, maybe even do an impromptu photography shoot. If they wanted to take a slight roadtrip, Bisbee is my absolute favorite spot I’ve visited in Arizona to date. A small town where you actually can witness people walking their goats down the street! Not to mention the amazing atmosphere and ghost stories. I’ve lived in Arizona all my life so the list goes on and on!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Man, what a hard thing to do: shout out everyone who has helped me on my journey. I’m so beyond grateful for each and every person that stood behind me and encouraged me to stand where I am today. Besides the man upstairs, it comes down to the support of my amazing family. My parents always taught me to reach for my dreams and empowered me to believe in the impossible. They took me in when I wanted to start over, they helped me when I was going through a rough patch in life, and they nursed me back to health after a life changing surgery. My siblings always stood by my side, despite thinking I was an odd ball, they would do anything for me. Now I also have a very supportive husband to thank for never letting me doubt myself and my daughter who is why I will continue to push for all my dreams to come true. I have to thank my cosmetology teachers, my mentor Chanelle after school and the support of all my wonderful clients that kept me in business through a pandemic! I have so much and so many people to be grateful for!
