We had the good fortune of connecting with Hailey Ostrom and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hailey, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I might have a different answer to this question than most. I wholeheartedly believe that the biggest factor behind the success of my brand is authenticity. When I started the journey of “content creating” for lack of a better term, I wanted to keep my page as authentically real as possible. I share my victories as well as my failures. I tell my most embarrassing stories. I let everyone know when I’m having a bad day. I keep it REAL! I don’t try to create a fairytale around my life. I think most “influencers” are afraid of sharing some of that personal stuff and personal emotions because they think people only want to see the good stuff. But that isn’t true. I have learned that people just want to be included in the journey. They want to feel like they’re a part of your success and give you advice during your failures. People just want to see what you’re doing, what you ate for breakfast, what airline seat you choose, what vacuum cleaner you use…it doesn’t matter what it is, people just want to know what you’re doing. So you might as well show them the REAL you and let them fall in love with that.

This goes for businesses and individuals outside of social media as well. I have worked with dozens of major businesses at this point in my career and I have asked them all of the questions you can think of. I have learned that to a lot of these companies, the most important factor to them is working with a person who aligns on values and is authentic. They want someone they can relate to. Because I am sharing most of my life, good and bad, it is very relatable to most people. If I was just posting about the times I get to fly first class or drive around in a luxury car, most people wouldn’t be able to relate to that. Instead, I share those moments and treat them as bizarre as they really are, describing how cool it is to get to do that, but it isn’t a normal event for me. Then I’ll joke about my back-of-the-plane-next-to-the-toilet seat on my Southwest flight. #Balance. Be authentic in what you do. You’ll find that your company/brand naturally attracts other individuals who align with you.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a professional golfer and “media personality” as I like to call it. Also known as “social media influencer”. I started this social media journey on a bet. A friend of mine had ran his celebrity brothers social media accounts and had learned how to organically grow the pages. He suggested that I should start a golf account to help find sponsors for my professional golf career. My exact words were “Why would anyone want to watch my golf swing?”. He gave me his tips and tricks on how to perform on social media to the best of his knowledge and made a bet that I would gain 1,000 new followers by the end of two weeks. I had 1,000 new followers in three days. Needless to say, I lost the bet and still owe him a golf lesson.

I have since then “retired” from competitive golf and focused my time on my media career. Of course there are many challenges being a female in a male-dominated industry. I have found a way to succeed within the industry in a different way than I originally planned. I may not be able to play on the PGA Tour and have dozens of major sponsors on my bag, but I can post golf content online and have those same sponsors for brand partnerships. I set my priorities and found a way to get them. While competitive golf was no longer the main priority, I decided that I wanted to create a name in the golf industry and work with major brands. There is always a way!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I may be biased, but I think Scottsdale is one of the best places to visit in the U.S. If you were visiting me I’d take you to play golf at one of our amazing courses here in the desert. My favorites are Camelback, Wekopa, Papago and Mountain Shadows, a fun par 3 course with the most amazing views of Camelback Mountain you’ll ever see. Speaking of Camelback Mountain, we’d definitely go on one of the two hikes with views of Scottsdale and the Phoenix skyline from the top.

If we’re playing golf AND hiking, we’d be working up quite the appetite! I’d take you to Old Town where we would have a huge array of food choices. Some of my favorite places to eat in Old Town are Diego Pops (a fun, hipster taco joint with the best atmosphere), Old Town Tortilla Factory (one of the oldest restaurants in Scottsdale with an amazing patio and the best margaritas you could ask for) or Geisha A-Go-Go (a trendy sushi restaurant and karaoke bar).

Luckily for us, nightlife is just around the corner from my favorite restaurants. We could hop on a couple Bird scooters or wave down a golf cart taxi and make our way to the club district. I would suggest Bevvy, a club that plays all of our favorite throwback songs from the ’90s and 2000’s. If we aren’t feeling the club vibe we can keep it more low-key and hit up Coach House, a local favorite dive bar that has live music and holiday events throughout the year.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents are a huge part of my success. They taught me to always let my morals guide me in life, business and relationships. They always helped me believe in myself and believe that the REAL version of myself would take me far; I never needed to pretend to be anything but myself. Thank you Mom and Dad!
