We had the good fortune of connecting with Haili McCance and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Haili, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Something that most people don’t understand about photography is how much goes on behind the scenes. When you book a photographer you aren’t just paying for the hour you are with them. You are paying for their experience, their gear, their time and expenses running the clerical side of the business, their talent, and the time we spend editing and retouching images. So much more goes on besides the hour we spend with you.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart is my heart and my experience. It will most definitely sound cheesy, but I actually care about the photos each family receives. As I capture each session I try and get to know my clients so that I know when they are busting out that real smile. I truly want each person (even grumpy spouses or shy kiddos) to feel at ease and have a good time. I know that when I deliver a session it will have the honor of hanging in the halls of someone’s home, or grace the pages of a baby book, or be mailed to friends and family in a Christmas card. Someday, years from now, all of my photos will capture the precious history and memories of a family. I’m truly humbled that this gets to be my job. My education and professional experience has had me working with kids, cameras, or both! I find it makes the perfect combo to get that big belly laugh out of your little ones. As a mama and as a former paraprofessional I’ve seen families forego family photo sessions because they have a family member with special needs and other photographers have not served or treated them well. I am proud to offer “special families sessions” where I tailor the session to fit your family at no extra charge. Every family deserves beautiful images to capture their life. Every family is welcome in front of my camera!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well let me start out by giving an honorable mention to my best friend, Jenna (also one of my biggest supporters), because she does visit Phoenix all the time and is the reason I have fun places to mention! We love hitting up OHSO’s any time of day to pet cute dogs and have the best food. Culinary dropout at any of their locations, but the Scottsdale location with a walk along the canal afterward makes for a lovely evening. You have to grab a coffee from Union Coffee in North Phoenix, and an afternoon pick me up from Dutch Brothers. The Phoenix Zoo is perfect for a day of walking around with the kids. If we are making a whole weekend out of it, we have headed North and stayed in Sedona and Flagstaff to escape the heat in the summer time. You can’t beat the quaint shop owners, the views, or the locals in either Sedona or Flagstaff! In the pre-covid era you could also catch us at a concert at Chase Field. Air conditioned country music in the middle of a Phoenix Summer? Sounds like a good night to me!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people who have contributed to my success, however I never would’ve had the courage to start this venture without the love, encouragement, and maybe a little push, from my husband. My husband, Chase, is my biggest supporter and teammate. Chase works crazy hours and still jumps right into “Dad mode” when he walks in the door so I can run to my next session or get editing done. When it’s 11pm and I’m cranking out “just one more session”, he is the one to bring me a coffee and tell me I’m doing a great job. The life we’ve built is truly a team effort in work, parenting, and marriage.
