Meet Hannah Charlton | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Charlton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, what inspires you?
Nature and the metaphysical are big inspirations for my art, and I think they are very overlapping. I feel very connected and peaceful when I am outside, and to me it is a sort of spirituality. I see a lot of beauty in plants and rocks and landscapes of course, but I am most inspired by the energy they have, and a lot of my art is me trying to create a visual interpretation of that energy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
While I have been doing some sort of art for most of my life, over the past few years I have had the opportunity to really work on developing a style and subject matter that feels exciting, inspirational and true-to-self. I have only been brave enough to really put my art out there for people to judge and purchase over the last year or so, and it has definitely been a challenge for many reasons. I have a toddler, another job, and my days are busy. Finding time for anything extra felt impossible, but on a whim I applied to sell art at an art and craft market. In 20-30 minute increments I built a small portfolio of work and ended up having a fantastic time with kind like-minded people – and even sold a few things! Now I am able to sell at about one market per month, and recently got an Etsy shop up and running.
I am proud that even on nights when I am tired, I still get myself to do something – even if I only get a bit of a block carved or one or two prints done. I am also proud that I feel good about the art that I’m making. It feels true to me and my heart.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would definitely visit Upper Bidwell Park and go for a hike or a swim in the creek. There are so many local art shows and pop ups, we would try to check out Divine Sundays, Lunar Market or Flume Street Fair.
We would make time to go to Lili’s Brazilian Bistro for some amazing food, as well as get a burger at Nobby’s, and some ice cream at La Flor de Michoacán.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many things have given me opportunities to make art, from my parents giving me access to art supplies and encouragement when I was a child, to art classes available in my k-12 schools, to support and space from Chico Art School as an adult. But I would not be able to do what I am doing right now if it wasn’t for the support of my husband Shea who both hypes me up and gives me the gift of time.
