We had the good fortune of connecting with Jade Peña and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jade, how do you think about risk?
In 2020, I decided it was time to take a risk. Prior to my decision, I had worked a range of different jobs since the age of 14. I worked at fast food restaurants, car washes, grocery stores, doggy daycares, retail, the assessor’s office, and a college. I had gained a lot of different skills and experiences over the years, but I was ready to make a change and pursue a career that I was truly passionate about. I wanted to start my own business.

With no prior business knowledge, I thought let’s jump right in and learn as I go. I was scared but had this overwhelming feeling of excitement. I was determined and willing to put in the hard work required. I believe risk is a huge factor in life, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences as well as one of the most challenging. Through my experience, I have been able to learn more about myself, and going through challenges has helped me grow. I feel I’ve become more free, open-minded, and understanding. Without taking a risk, I may have been still walking around with the feeling of “what if?” It has been a roller coaster of a ride but I am proud to say that I’m making my dream a reality. I am now more confident and have learned to embrace the unknown!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My e-commerce business, Emerald Eclectic, sells a variety of items, hence the name eclectic. My products are often things I enjoy myself. I believe it’s important to be passionate about the products you are selling, so I am always on the lookout for unique and interesting items to add to my store. I strive to provide my customers with quality products and a great shopping experience.

One of my favorite reviews from a customer was about how the product was packaged, she said “I. Love. My. Case! I was scouring Etsy and Amazon for months trying to find a case I like. I finally decided I wanted the leaf case and this seller had the sweetest deal for it. It also came in an adorable pouch with stickers! I can tell whoever packaged my case really cared and the kindness made me tear up as life has been rough lately. The quality is also amazing and I have had no issues with the case falling off or shifting. Thank you, I love it!” As a business owner and service provider, I am most proud to know that I can make my customers’ day and that I enjoy what I do!

I found it easy to start my business because I was so excited, but asking for help has been my biggest challenge. I was worried that people wouldn’t take me seriously, or that I would be judged for not knowing everything. Thankfully, I have had friends along the way to show me the ropes and constantly encourage me. With their support, I was able to develop my business plan and find the resources I needed to get started. I’m now more confident in seeking out help and advice when I need it. I’m also grateful for the opportunity to help others in the same way.

As Roy T. Bennett once said: “Live the life of your dreams, when you start living the life of your dreams, there will always be obstacles, doubters, mistakes, and setbacks along the way. But with dedication, perseverance, and self-belief there is no limit to what you can achieve.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you’re looking for a night out, Downtown Tucson is definitely one of the top places to go! The first place that comes to mind is Che’s Lounge on 4th. Every time I’m there I have to grab myself a black and blue, it’s made of half Blue Moon & half Guinness. Another place is The Century Room located inside Hotel Congress. It’s an awesome place to listen to live jazz performed by local musicians. If you’re wanting to grab a bite to eat while strolling downtown, I would suggest Bison Witches. They have some tasty sandwiches and bread bowls.

Depending on the time of year, the Fourth Avenue street fair is really fun to visit. The festival offers a wide variety of food, artists’ tents, and merchant tents. Visitors can enjoy live music and performances, browse local art, and purchase handmade items. There are also activities for kids, so the whole family can have a fun day out. I would also recommend taking a drive up Mt. Lemmon or hiking in Sabino Canyon. Both are absolutely beautiful and scenic.

I personally love a good breakfast, so one of my favorite spots would be The Dutch for some bottomless mimosas! YUM! Bisbee Breakfast Club with the family or if you’re wanting a nice breakfast date, I think LaCo Tucson is perfect. They are located downtown, have live music, and you’re able to look around at the Old Town Artisan shops nearby!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of my biggest supporters throughout my experience has been my mother. She has been my backbone and encourages me every day to keep going! I love her dearly and want to let her know how grateful I am for her.

I would also love to shout out my dear friend Angelique Aubrahm. She is the founder of Aubrahm Media and a media specialist. She has always been passionate about her business and stays focused on her dreams! She has been an inspiring influence on me and has constantly been an uplifting voice. Thank you, Angelique!

Another individual that I’d like to mention is my friend Mohamed. Mohamed has helped me get my business organized and on the right path. He’s been a great mentor and has sponsored my business along the way. I’m grateful for all the knowledge he has passed down to me and for his constant support!

Lastly, a BIG thank you to my fiancé. Thank you for your constant love, support, and understanding. You motivate me every day to be the best version of myself. I’m eternally grateful to have you through everything! Xoxo
