We had the good fortune of connecting with Jarrod Compton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jarrod, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
From a young age I always knew that music/production was my calling. Throughout many years of trial and error I knew that finding success in my own music was always this unspoken underlying goal, even before I knew I could do this for real.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
With the name originally being founded in 2009, Comptalo is an Arizona rapper/producer/songwriter who blends modern hip-hop with elements of rock, reggae, jazz, and psychedelia.

The project has seen many phases from acoustic singer songwriter to blues rock to it’s now modern phase of experimental hip-hop. I always struggled for many years trying to find out who I was musically. I have been in many bands ranging from punk to alternative rock to metal. I saw many sides of me, and although i enjoy playing these genres the music never really got deep into my soul until i stumbled across my first rebrand single “Keep in Touch”. I knew this was the direction i had to go in. It almost felt like the path was just layed out for me.

I take great pride in the visual image I portray with my brand. It took many years to get it to the level I wanted and needed it to be. I wanted to create loose versions of different characters of myself and of course bringing my cat Lucy along for the ride.

My crowning achievement as Comptalo to date was the release cycle of my 2021 4th hip hop project “Stop Calling Me” seeing 2 high budget music videos to collaborations with different Arizona artists to a full concept album of an abandoned voicemail box. It was an almost 2 year process from conception to release. It was the most work and money I have ever put into a project. It opened the eyes of many and I’m so ready for the future.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly, I’d take them to a Woodworks or Chrome Rhino show at one of our favorite local venues such as Last Exit, Rebel Lounge, or Crescent Ballroom. As things start to normalize a bit more we start having a more surge of great shows happening CONSTANTLY. So many cool things always happening in Phoenix whether it be shows, art on first friday, or just drinking mules while feeling the groove.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe everything I have and have done to so many people at so many different times throughout my life/career path.

My number one will always be my dad for showing me the importance of music in our lives and our family’s. Showed me music and gave me a foundation to create my own taste in music, and also pushed me to learn how to play music.

My number 2 is Kevin Michael Prier (The Real Fakes, formerly Black Moods, Chalmers Green). I learned so much from Kevin from songwriting techniques to singing techniques. Kevin has always been on board with anything I’m involved in and that love goes a long way.

Number 3 is Danny Torgersen (Dan E.T. , Captain Squeege, The Irie, Badfish, Grieves). I’ve looked to Danny for advice many times throughout our collaborations. I dont think I’ve met someone who has believed in me the way he does. He gives me a vision of bigger and better things for my brand.
