We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Enck and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would have to say the most important factor behind the success of my brand is keeping it true to my personality. I love to have fun and laugh and keep things lighthearted. My products are a true extension of that. Through the years I have had several businesses but the ones that have been the most successful are the ones that reflect my personality. Always be true to yourself!
Please tell us more about your business. How did you get to where you are today business-wise. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Dandy Like Candy is a women’s accessory company. All the products are handmade by me and are currently sold online and in over 140 stores and boutiques across the country. I am also excited to announce I have recently received my very first international account and will soon be sold in Canada! Although I went to school for art, most of my working career has been in the automotive industry as an accountant. I enjoy working with numbers but it is not my true passion. Being able to create a business where I can use my creative side as well as understand and handle my own bookkeeping and financial statements has given me the best of both worlds. I started this business while working full time at a demanding job. My biggest challenge is scheduling my work load so that I can be successful in all areas of my life from work, to my own business to personal. I learned early on that being diligent and scheduling my time gave me the results I wanted to see but also allowed me to have free time and enjoy life. Having a work/life balance is crucial.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Arizona is a great place! We have so much to offer here. I live in a cool town called Gilbert, Since I am an artist at heart, I love to take visitors to see some of the local artisans at the Gilbert Art Walk and head across the street to the Gilbert Farmers Market and pick up some amazing local food and produce. It is my favorite way to spend a Saturday morning! My little town is not so little anymore and we have become quite the foodie mecca so of course we would have to visit some of the bars and restaurants popping up in Downtown Gilbert like Ohso Brewery, Barrio Queen or Postino’s. For the nature lovers, I would take them a few miles down the road to the Riparian Preserve and walk some trails and see some of the Arizona wildlife. Its a hidden gem!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A little over 2 years ago, a good friend and I made a pact to be accountability partners for our businesses. Even though the businesses we had in our heads were nothing alike, we promised to push, motivate and encourage each other to chase our dreams and not give up. At that time I had decided to launch a new business, Dandy Like Candy, and within 2 weeks I had created a new logo, website and obtained my first wholesale account. If it were not for her consistent check ins and being such a great sounding board, I would not have gotten as far as I have in such a short time. Thank you to Cara Czarnecki for being one of my biggest supporters and motivators! I also am blessed to have an amazing support system of friends and family that are always in my corner and don’t roll their eyes at me too much when I come up with my next big idea.
