We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As a young child I always dreamt about owning my own business. I saw family members who developed and built their own business, living a life of freedom. As I became older, I like many people worked in corporate America. I did not have control over my schedule, vacation or simply time with my family. I realized the dream of being my own boss was still alive and well. But fell victim to the normal pitfall that everyone feels, being timing just was not right. Marriage, children, work, home ownership and all the other responsibilities just seemed to get in the way. As my children were growing up and becoming more independent, I started my journey into health and fitness, and I LOVED IT. I would take an hour a day and go to the gym…this was my “ME time”. My passion for fitness grew and I decided to get certified as personal trainer and group fitness instructor. I decided to take my love for fitness and transition into working in a gym part time. I kept telling my husband, when I teach, I am getting paid to work out. It is a WIN WIN situation for me. Over the years of pursuing my fitness passion, I would think of ways to be my own boss and create something of my own. I was attending a fitness conference in Mesa, Arizona and was surrounded by like-minded individual’s and I was listening to their stories and how they started their own businesses and were doing what they loved to do. That same feeling of owning my own business came back stronger than ever. While attending this conference, I met “my twin” Jacquese Silvas we hit it off right away. We discovered that our beliefs on training, philosophies and styles were amazingly similar. We stayed in touch and I began teaching group fitness classes at her studio. During a random conversation we mentioned partnering up and creating an online fitness challenge based in social media. WOW!!! We loved it and decided to create an online health and fitness company. We researched the companies available online. We looked at what seemed to work and what drove people away. We wanted a program that someone starting out could join and receive the help they need as well as challenging a person who already works out and is looking for that next level of performance. During this research and consideration of the business we both felt we had found a platform that could serve this need in the fitness industry. We both decided to take that leap of faith and on February 14, 2020 POWR’d was born and we have not looked back. When you Dream it and believe it you will achieve it.
What should our readers know about your business?
POWR’d is an online health and wellness business which allows clients to obtain workouts and meal plans. All workouts are customized to the client’s overall goals and ability. The meal plans are set and designed to accommodate individuals eating preferences. They can also be set for nutritional beliefs (i.e. vegan, gluten free, vegetarian etc.) allergy restrictions, like and dislikes of certain foods. The program even differentiates in international food choices or availably. One thing that sets us apart is the owners and founders demonstrate and perform all of the exercises on the web site. All of our clients also have the ability to contact myself or Jacquese directly, no answering service or third-party involvement is ever used. We believe customer service is our number one priority. What excites me most is it is a continuously expanding and growing endeavor. We started with workouts and meal plans and have already expanded into different areas. One-on-One coaching is available as we wanted to bring a more personal experience to those who wanted it. We also developed a mind-body component recognizing the importance of mental well-being and relaxation which goes hand in hand with taking care of the physical body. I felt creating our business plan was easy due to our passion for health and wellness. The difficulties we found were obtaining on online platform that allowed us to develop the program keeping it as personal as we desired. We wanted to maintain the intimate feel of the relationship between trainer and clients. This was the most challenging obstacle in developing a fitness business based online. Since starting the business, I rapidly learned there is always a next step. At the beginning I believed the workouts and meal plans were the business goal. Upon opening and developing I quickly learned the business is constantly evolving. What has surprised me most is the excitement and passion of consistent change has overridden my desire to simply stay in my comfort zone. I surprised myself by enjoying and looking forward to the new developments. What we want the world the see about our business and story is that anyone can do it. We hope the message is clear that a housewife and mother in Mesa, Arizona can teach and inspire people worldwide. Mostly, Jacquese and I want anyone coming into contact with our business through joining or simply checking us out is, this is us. We are not perfect, we are sometimes goofy, we will always try our hardest to never let you down but in the end, we are two independent women who have followed their dream in building their business.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
… Living in Arizona there are so many places to go and see, but when my family of friends come to visit, I want to show them the all the of my favorite places to go. My favorite place to go breakfast is the Farmhouse in Gilbert, the food is amazing. We will then spend the day in downtown Gilbert walking around and checking out the local shops. Many weekends they will have local vendors who will have handmade. Going to lunch at Oregano’s is always a must!! This stop is always on my to do list when we are having friends or family visit. For some fun nightlife I would take them to San Tan Flats in Queen Creek, you can either sit inside or outside in a rustic, fun atmosphere. We love the outdoors so I would make sure we went on an early morning hike to the Superstition Mountain packing a picnic lunch and enjoying the day. We love the outdoors so I would definitely rent paddle boards from No Snow PaddleBoard Shop in Mesa. This is such a fun way to show our friends the beautiful scenery of the lake and mountain. A drive to Sedona is always on my list of favorite things to do, renting a jeep from the Pink Jeep tours and spending the afternoon looking the beautiful red rock.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out.. I would like to first start out by thanking my parents, without their amazing love and support I would not be the woman I am today. They taught me how to be strong and go after what you want in life. My mom would always tell me ‘the sky is the limit; you can do anything you set your mind to do”. She always believed in me and told me to chase my dreams. I have also been blessed with having the most wonderful sisters. My sisters come from opposite sides of the spectrum, my sister Debbie is fierce, she never shows fear and lives life to the fullest. She has taught me to there is no reason to be afraid, go after what you want. My sister Diana is all about love and patience. She has one of the most laid-back personalities I have ever seen in a woman who is successful in her field. She has taught me most importantly to relax and take a breath and everything will work out. The person who has been my biggest cheerleader in my life is my husband Jim. There are not enough words to express how much he has been there for me. He has led our life by example having a very successful career in law enforcement. To give our family a little extra he always maintained a second job on the side to provide those special things. As a police officer he always maintained a high level of fitness which was important for his job. Even with this he ended up having a life changing medical situation that in many cases would stop someone from living life to the fullest. The example he set for my children and I is you can go through a traumatic experience and still push yourself to achieve your goals and dreams. He showed me you can work hard and work extra and still have time for your family. His love and support are one of the main reasons I am successful. He pushes me to purse my goals and supports me in all I do. He is my rock when I need support, he keeps me focused when life gets crazy and he keeps me grounded when I get too big for my britches. Austin and Samantha, my children, have seen me at my best and seen me at my worst. They have watched me grow and develop in the fitness industry from when I first started as a personal trainer to being a business owner. I never felt they resented the time I spent away from them as I developed my fitness expertise. As they got older, they switched from needing my support to being two of my greatest supporters in going for my career. The love and patience they have shown me while I progress has been the best support my children could have given me. I cannot thank my best friend Terri Cummings enough for the impact she has had on my life. She is a true friend who will tell me what I want to hear as well as what I need to hear. She understands our friendship can withstand the brutal truth when I need to hear it. My friend and business partner Jacquese Silvas for teaching me how to stop hesitating and take the leap into business. She has shown me that personal growth requires me to step outside my comfort zone. .
