We had the good fortune of connecting with Jesse Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jesse, what do you attribute your success to?
I would like to start out by saying thank you for having me back on your platform. The term success is kind of open ended and perceived differently by each person. For example, success can be measured by money, time, status etc. I would say my success is because I don’t focus on the money or status, but solely on the branding. I become the character, which is an owner of a door business. I put my Val Doors shirt on everyday with my jeans and work boots and put myself out to the world that I am ready to fix their doors. It may help that I am passionate about what I do and there is no plan B for me- this is it! Lastly, I would say just keep going and know that success will happen as long as you never give up.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own and operate Val Doors LLC, a commercial door install and repair business. I owned a handyman business when I was 18 to 24, but stopped when I was offered a commercial door technician position. I worked at 4 different door companies over 10 years before I started my own company. In 2011, I purchased my first work van and passed the contractor’s exam, but the timing was not right to start the business. So, I continued to work until 2017 when my mom encouraged me to quit my job and go for it. I cashed into my retirement, re-took my contractor’s exam, and before I knew it Val Doors was up and running. I am proud to say I have never taken out a loan and I encourage others to not put themselves in debt to start a business. I am a firm believer that businesses need to be built from the ground up without taking any shortcuts along the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love to go out to eat so I would probably take them to my favorite restaurants: Breakfast: Inner Circle Cafe, U.S. Egg, Alo Cafe, and Otro.
Lunch: Gallo Blanco, Don Joses, Los Sombreros, and Cornish Pasty.
Dinner: House of Tricks, Pizzeria Bianco, Rusconi’s Kitchen

If its during the summer I would probably rent a cabana at either The Phoenician or The Scott resort to relax and have drinks. At night go to Top Golf, bowling, or my favorite Medievil Times.

If we had time, I would take them hiking in Sedona and Flagstaff. I recommend the Hotel Monty Vista for a quick trip to Flagstaff-the hotel has a lot of character and is supposedly haunted.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like thank my wife, Kelly for always supporting and being my rock through everything. She keeps me going when times get tough and listens to all my business ideas.
